Targa Tasmania

The last stage almost wasn't completed by the L18 powered 510. They put plenty of oil in, and the car was blowing blue smoke, but the car held together, and just made it across the line.

During an interview at the finish, the driver said something like "You just can't break these little Datsuns"

That's Graham Copeland's car, driven this year by John Siddins. They have always shared the driving duties in previous years. They're both Brisbane guys, John is a regular competitor in sprints and hillclimbs up here in his awesomely fast british racing green 240Z with 2950-ish cc L series 6. He's a great talent and always looks very smooth, and is commonly the fastest closed car at many events he enters. A bit of a legend in the local scene up here, and this result didn't surprise anyone who knows him.

Graham used to do a few local events (mainly historics stuff) as well, and the last time I saw him competing at a local event, I beat him in that same car! but that was around 18 months ago, and I think it's safe to say his car has had a fair bit of development since then as he is focusing on Targa Tas only these days. They finished 2nd last year as well to Broadbents 911RSR, which was absolutely unbeatable in the category! Broadbent entered in a GT3 this year and finished 3rd in Modern, so he's pretty mean steerer too.

About the joint venture, converted, what did you have in mind?

I'm about to start the build of another car to FIA International Rally regs, as my 1200 isn't legal for those events. I'm having 4 weeks off in Aug to begin the build-up of the new car. I think it should be competitive, but it's a bit out of left feild. It's still a Datsun though

I was watching the Targa on the telly on Sunday. The finish was pretty good, the lil' Datto was getting about 25km per litre (of oil) due to a swallowed valve guide. Running on this 2 stroke mix, the car was'nt doing good times and on the last day a bloke in his gtv6 was about 1 second behind... The gtv6 was planted into an embankment, leaving the datto '1800' to tootle to the finish line, too easy...

I just love seeing the $$$Mustangs and Toranas getting done in by a datto...

Priceless

there was some much more exotic machinery than Mustangs and Toranas that got blown away by the limping H510...it beat every other pre 1981 car entered, including:

* Porsche 911's including Turbos, and a couple of 928 S
* Jags - E-type , XJS
* Ferraris 308, 365, Dino
* twin cam Escorts
* Triumph TR7 V8s
* Mazda RX7's
* Vauxhall Chevette (now that's a cool car!)
* MGB V8
* and even some other, probably more fancied, Datsuns - 240/260Z and Sports 2000
as well as the odd GTHO (worlds fastest 4 door production car of the time), the 600hp orange HQ Monaro - if you saw the telecast you'll remember it! and a gaggle of Toranas
