I own a datsun 1200 coupe, I bought with an L20 already in. Only problems its got 4 speed box and i would like to convert to a 5 speed. But being a bit new to all this i dont know which would be the best match and where to get it.

My car needs a bit of work. Im also planning on putting in twin webbers so im just trying to gather info.

Cheers

I've asked that same question before, I have a 610 with an L20B motor, and it is automatic, so the answer I got is the 280Z 5 speed transmission/gear box. It is the best for the L20B, unless better opinion, always open minded.

The C210 Skyline box is plentiful and just about unbreakable. Worth a look.

Ask Feral Errol, but in mind opinon use any 6 cylinder L - series box for strength. For point to point stuff i'd use an early 260z box, although a 240k are widely available and cheap.

hay i would reccomend a 240k gear box as mate has got a red coupe with a l20b motor in it worked with a 240k gearbox and has no probs with it
but it wil not fit tunnel best bet it 2 get a 1600 tunnel and put that into your coupe then put box in.. not that hard of a job..and very neat!

FWIW, you can get a short tail 5spd from a 77-79 200SX (Silvia down under?). This will fit right in the place of the 4spd and use the same driveshaft. Only downside is it's a "dog-leg" (1st is down). Personally I like the 79-83 280ZX box, but it's fairly widely spaced and best used for bigger (read more torque ) engines, and has a highway friendly 0.75 5th gear.
