I put my car on a set of corner scales on Saturday. It is 851kg with about 5l of fuel. Which is pretty light compared to most cars in my class. A friend's 1600 with quite alot of attention to lightening components weighed in at 947kg with a more basic 6 point steel cage on the same scales.

Remember that includes the cage built to current CAMS specs, which my cage builder estimated at 59kg, but that may well have been a mistake judging by the weight of the cage in the 1600 on Feral's site.

Weight distribution is 54.5% front and 45.5% rear. Which is not fantastic, but still quite acceptable for a competition car.

Yep, 850 is light for a 2 litre class car!
The 240 tipped the scales at 920kg wet the last time it was weighed.

I'm hoping that the latest round of lightening will get it down to 880, but it's starting to get expensive to find weight without cutting the shell up now...

That's 1876 lbs.
L-Series puts ~60 lbs. (27kg) more over the front wheels than the A-Series..

Harry,
Thats weight balance between front and rear axles is pretty damn good. Front corner weights of 232 kg is about 20 kg per corner below normal for most L series powered cars.

Actually have the amount of weight bias on the front axle is quite good. With weight transfer under accelleration your car would be dead neutral.

That weight bias is almost perfect and if you used helium for the front tires then youd be right on

What I dont understand yet is how steve Newings old 1200 weighed in at 620kgs and Bostons old 1000 at 560 or so. They have alloy roll cages and FRP guards of course and many endless mods.

Harry besides the l18, cage bigger box and diff what else have you done to get 851kgs

My maths is 851 - 27kg L18 to a15 - 59 roll cage - 15kg? 240z box to sunny box - 20kgs? for heavier diff? = 730kgs base?

Also are alloy roll cages safe compared to mild steel ones??
I seen alloy cages in accidents and they arent prettly

It's not hard (or expensive) to get 1200's pretty light

Tyrepower Coupe

My old one above had an overweight steel cage, steel doors, bonnet and boot, steel diff head, steel hubs, leaf springs and still came in at 592 wet.

You just need to get a bit anal and pay attention to detail..... (attacking the door hinges with a 1/2 inch drill bit for instance)

Armed with a few bucks and a good engineer you could get down to around 560 methinks, Stirlingmac and I have been toying with this idea for a while, just because everyone we talk to sez "bullshit"!

I've seen alloy cages fall to bits in a prang, just about killed my mini seven piloting friend back a few years now....

Wow. My sedan should be extremely light then given I am using an a-series motor and I don't have the extra weight of a coupe.

I dunno D - there's not alot of stuff left in there that I don't need. There's a few brackets left in the interior that I have not removed.

There's lots of other stuff to factor into the weight too. Struts and brakes are bigger and heavier than standard. Bigger radiator, spoilers, tailshaft, the twin carbs, steel strut brace, etc etc that all weigh more than standard.

With Improved Prod rules you must keep all steel panels and bumpers, all glass and winder mechanisms, doot locks, handles and mechanisms, all interior trim below the window line (exculding carpet), dashboard. Lights and wipers must remain operable etc. And no hole drilling allowed in any components. So it's apples and oranges really.
