A live axle is the traditional non-independent axle system. Both left and right wheel hubs are fixed to a straight axle tube with a differential in the center. For a rear-wheel-drive vehicle it is relatively inexpensive for the automaker, yet competent. The suspension around a live axle can be modified for high-performance use.
