Most Datsun 1200s were fitted with a 4-speed floor shift manual transmission (FS4W56). However, the Standard trim models came with a 3-speed column shift (R3W56). This transmission had a higher 1st gear than the 4-speed (3.380:1 vs 3.757:1), meaning takeoff was a bit slower than the 4-speed, and starting on steep hils a bit more difficult. R = Remote shift W = Warner type synchros 56 = spacing between shafts (56-Series Transmission)
The remote-shift gearbox is easily recognizable by its lack of an upright gear shift apparatus on the extension housing.
