This transmission had a higher 1st gear than the 4-speed (3.380:1 vs 3.757:1), meaning takeoff was a bit slower than the 4-speed, and starting on steep hils a bit more difficult. <- Back to 56-Series Transmission
Most Datsun 1200s were fitted with a 4-speed floor shift manual transmission (FS4W56). However, the Standard trim models came with a 3-speed column shift (R3W56). This transmission had a higher 1st gear than the 4-speed (3.380:1 vs 3.757:1), meaning takeoff was a bit slower than the 4-speed, and starting on steep hils a bit more difficult. The 4-speed is a direct bolt-in replacement for the 3-speed.
Overview
Standard trim (STD) Datsun 1200 models came standard with an R3W56 transmission. This was a remote-shift box with a Steering Column-mounted shifter.

The remote-shift gearbox is easily recognizable by its lack of an upright gear shift apparatus on the extension housing.

Note that the North American market got 4-speeds transmissions, never any 3-speeds.
Older B10 transmission, note the bell crank clutch mechanism instead of cable clutch:
