Speeduino is the new open-source DIY engine ECU. It can run ignition-only, EFI-only or both. It can trigger COP or coil packs. It uses the Arduino Mega 2560 ($23 as of 2022) and reportedly works well with many Arduino clones (as inexpensive as $13). Speeduino Australia, but also sold in USA and in England — see where to buy. Speeduino fully assembled is $160 (as of 2022) or $10 for the bare PCB board. Add sensors, wiring, and CPU and it's ready to go. The TunerStudio software even has an auto-tune feature if you add an O2 sensor.

Contents

Spark

Speeduino can use any many different types of Trigger Patterns and Decoders.

including:

  • Nissan Optical CAS such as RB, E15ET, CA18DET, SR20, etc. Configure Tuner Studio for "Nissan 360" decoder
  • Ford-style #36-1 crank trigger wheel

Speeduino support using the stock distributor & coil OR crank trigger ignition using twin coil packs or coil-on-plug coil.

Use a common Ford VR sensor with a $25 add-on Speeduino VR Conditioner board.

Or, use a more expensive 3-wire Hall Sensor without needing an add-on board.

Coils

Speeduino supports everything from the stock distributor & coil to the new Coil On Plug units.

Single Coil

Speeduino can work with the stock points-type distributor and with Electronic Ignition distributors. You can use the stock ignition coil or an aftermarket type, in other words, no need to change the ignition setup to add EFI. This is called "basic distributor" by Speeduino.

Theoretically, you could even use an E15ET distributor & stock ET15 high-energy coil. Modify it so it works in the A-series block and let Speeduino read the Nissan Optical CAS so it can control the spark timing.

Coil Packs

With a crank trigger, you can use Ford, Chrysler or GM twin coil packs.

COP

Speeduino directly supports four 'smart' coils with built in igniters (3 pin type). No external ignitor is needed.

You can also use dumb COPs (2 pin type) by adding an ignitor module such as CA18DET ignitor or SR20 ignitor. These COPs are as inexpensive as $22 each brand new.

You can use four smart (low-current) Coil on Plug units. See Speeduino Ignition. With crank trigger, use two pairs wired together. With a Cam sensor or Nissan Optical CAS, you can wire them individually.

Tuning

Download the free TunerStudio software.

For ignition-only, start with the basic tune file (Speeduino base tune.msq). You can further edit the VE Table, AFR Table, and Spark Tables using TunerStudio.

Alternatively you can generate a custom 16x16 TABLE using the Microsquirt tool. Then use the Import command in TunerStudio to load it in.

TunerStudio can also read in an MSQ file if it's in Speeduino format. This file contain the maps/tables along with all the configutation and sensor settings.

As always, test the changed Spark Curve before driving extensively. Be sure to use a quiet exhaust system so you can hear detonation. If you have trouble hearing it — for example if your muffler is loud — use Detonation Cans.

AutoTune

O2-based autotune will fine-tune the air-fuel ratios (Registered version of TunerStudio required).
