Datsun 1200 pickups -- being Coupe Utilities (utes) -- only came with an integral cargo bed. But enterprising Datsun 1200 fans have created trayback (flatbed) versions of the Ute. This is done by cutting the unibody and replacing the rear half with a subframe or a full frame.

The tray-back might have a nice polished wood deck on top of a polished alloy tray, sitting flush with the back of the cab. The timber top could be flush with the sides and with thin contrasting timber sides.

Or maybe just a nice aluminum tray:

How To

Is it as easy has cutting off the quarter panels, removing the tray from the chassis and welding it all up and then bolting on the new tray?

The main problem that you will encounter is that a datsun 1200 ute has no chassis structure. The back of the ute is part of the body which gives it its strength. I assume you would have to make up a half chassis or something similar.

This is also a good time to add Wheel Tubs to the ute for mighty big tires.

Legality

Would this be legal In australia?

As usual, the USA has no legal restrictions for this kind of body modifications.
