Re: New Engine Aiden, I knew that you would do good in your career but this just blows me away. Congratulations on the new record & I suspect that 'the Boss' will be looking over his shoulder in the very near future at Wakefield, a track that untill now, he seems to hold the mortgage on. On the upside, I guess that he can always say that your car & its first engine was born in his workshop.

Re: New Engine That car, & you yourself have moved forward by a significant order of magnitude. It's a far cry from the car in the first photos that I took & I'm really really impressed, you've made a real race car of it. Are they the same extractors that you started with? If you do your dyno runs at the same place that the carbs were tuned at, then please let me know & I'll be there with camera at the ready. The other thread on harmonic balancers has inspired another forumite to order a harmonic balancer for his engine & after a conversation with him, I too placed an order about 10 minutes ago. At this rate you should tell them that you expect a slab of beer at Xmas as a thank you for the extra business you bring. The balancer for the A series is not listed by them as a production item but they have made three that I know of so far [all for this area] & now have the necessary drawings, so less work will be involved in future manufacture & if anyone is thinking of one, then now's the time to ring them & talk to Ben as a short production run just might produce some savings, ... ya just never know. Pully sizes are as per customer specs so small pulleys for race engines are no problem. Gilmer belt drives [toothed belt] seem to be no problem either. If they save a crank & a flywheel from parting company, then it's got to be worth it.

Re: New Engine The 'racer standard' for A series engines in the 1600cc class is to start with an A15 which has an 82mm stroke & bore it from the original 76mm out to 79mm which yeilds 1608cc.

Re: New Engine ok. and is it common too see temperature rises from such an increase in bore? it makes the liner very thin?
and what about injectors, what injectors did you use to work with the haltech and fit into the Efi setup?

Re: New Engine When I bored the block I offset the bores .020" away from the thin part of the block between 1 & 2 and between 3 & 4. I had to use a nismo head gasket as the standard monotorque ones aren't quite big enough. The engine does come up to temperature a bit quicker than normal, but doesn't rise above 85 degrees at idle. The injectors I used were just ford or holden bosch ones that were laying around, got em serviced and they'll be good enough for this engine. The haltech was super easy to setup and get running and seems very easy to tune. One thing I had to change was my battery leads and starter motor because the old stuff couldn't deal with the 250 psi of compression in the cylinders And Dodgeman, I'll be aiming for the saturday after next to get her out to Bundy, I'll let you know though. EDIT: The extractors are still your old ones' Dodge, with a slight modification to number one runner to go around the Weber manifold.

Re: New Engine When I had those extractors made I specified the thickest material that his bender could handle. I believe that he followed my request to the letter as they are now some 25 years old & still in serviceable condition even after being out of service & out of doors for about 8 to 10 years or so.
They worked well for me & obviously for you too. Sometimes paying a little extra for quality is really a bargain. Looking forward to seeing it & you in action & hopefully you can give The Boss' a little hurry-up around the circuit.

Re: New Engine Well I've had a few runs in the car now with the new engine and it goes like a scorched ar$ehole. I've had to replace the clutch with a 3 puck ceramic item because it torched the old one, but other than that it's been a hiccup free run-in. I broke the class record at Fairburn Park hillclimb in Canberra by 0.6 seconds yesterday, so it's well worth all the after hours work that has been put in.

Re: New Engine air filters? tight fit. if you run socks, you my run into difficulty. make sure you tune it with them on (if you run them) I had to make some mods to the socks and the springs to make them work.

Re: New Engine nick_m, it has 2 magnets as the crank pulley is in the same place for TDC of 1 and 4, other magnet is for TDC of 2 and 3 they are just 360 degrees after each other, the whole 2 rotations to an engine cycle thing

Re: New Engine PIGDOG's right, a south pole magnet for TDC on cylinders 1 and 4, and a north pole magnet for cylinders 2 and 3. Very easy setup. I'm currently making an aluminium airbox to cover the trumpets which will extend to the front of the engine bay and have a panel filter in the front to draw nice cool air, and give me somewhere to mount my IAT sensor. Might still have to shorten the trumpets a bit.

Re: New Engine Top looking setup there Aiden, those trumpets are a work of art! Have you had to change fuel lines/tank setup for the throttle bodies, what pump are you using?

Re: New Engine All the fuel lines have been changed to 3/8, the stock fuel tank has been replaced with a 30 litre foam filled fuel cell, i've got my old fuel pump acting as a lift pump to a 2 litre surge tank, with a bosch 044 pump sending the fuel forwards to the engine bay. Probably sounds like overkill for a n/a A15, but no more lean outs for me thanks.

Re: New Engine Excellent, Im interested to see how quicker your car is with the injection, tuning will definitely be easier, not to mention the driveability of throttle bodies! I am using -6 lines (I think equals 3/8) I just need to find a steel weld on fitting for the outlet on the stock tank, then someone to weld it, if it looks to expensive I'll just buy a foam filled like you.

Re: New Engine 100 bucks off ebay for a RCI one, you cant go wrong. Plus some classes of circuit racing requires that the tank be foam filled, and i'm keen to have a crack at that maybe next year.

Re: New Engine It wouldn't be hard to throw the carbs back on and run the ignition with the haltech, but it'd be just for the sake of comparison. The blue lead going through the firewall is the positive battery lead going to the starter motor, it's the same colour as the ignition leads. The trigger is just an aluminium wheel on the front of the crank with two magnets in it.

Re: New Engine I've got it idling and can drive it around but it is way too rich at the moment, i'll put it on the dyno and get the tune sorted in a couple of weeks. I reckon the map will only be of use to you if you've got the same cam, injectors etc. that i've got.

Also what do you use for you reference for ignition It certainly looks the business, when i saw the title New engine i thought i'd open it up and it'd be a picture of another CA! glad it wasn't :)
