![](http://datsun1200.com/images/icons/no_posticon.gif) Re: OLD banger ute I am sure someone has tried it, but I don't think it would work that well to be worthwhile. (Nos is commonly called liquid boost) Nos is stored as a compressed liquid and when it is released through a fine hole it comes out cold and it turns into a gas ( nos is non-flammable) as this gas is compressed and heated in the combustion camber it expands more,(just like the boost effect of a turbo or supercharger) this gas is high in oxygen. And oxygen is what is required to burn the extra fuel that hopefully was supplied to the engine at the same time as the nos.
The reason some turboed engines use nos is:
the engine has a big turbo and to get this turbo to spool up, lots of exhaust gases are required. until the turbo spools up the engine suffers from turbo lag ( basically its a dog down low) To overcome this, nos and extra fuel is supplied to the engine so the exhaust gases increase enough to make the turbo spool up. (From then on the nos isn't required)

It exists as a joke in the same way as the Roth characters on T shirts that protrude through the roof of various cars with gear levers above their heads. Gross & obvious overkill is humorous.
I would dearly love to see this thing at full throttle on a steep hill with a heavy load on a dark night. The flame would not resemble any candle that i ever saw.
Another name for NOx is chemical cubic inches. "NOS" is a trade mark for Nitrous Oxide Systems. This is one of the various companies that deal in NOx systems & to use the trademark as a substitute for NOx means that their publicity machine & brainwashing department have well & truly earned their keep.
Spraying NOx onto the fins of the inlet compressor disc of a turbo is an old trick that does have some benefits. It works best on cars that have a smallish light turbo & use a lot of NOx. The benefit diminishes as the turbines get bigger / heavier &/or if a small NOx charge is used.

![](http://datsun1200.com/images/icons/no_posticon.gif) Re: OLD banger ute People People..
I've never heard so many people talk around the truth regarding N20 or Nitrous Oxide use.
Nitrous is used because of it's increase in oxygen density, when compared to regular atmospheric air. The whole game of turbos is to compress the intake air, and squeeze more oxygen molecules (and allow the equivalent amount of fuel) into the cylinder chamber for combustion. The N20 molecule is much tighter bound than the loose mixture of gases that we call "air".
The cooler temperature of nitrous has very little, if anything to do with power benefit.
Read more about this at your local friendly Nitrous Kit suppliers website.
Cheers, Chris

![](http://datsun1200.com/images/icons/no_posticon.gif) Re: OLD banger ute Dattodude,
I 100% agree on the oxygen content of nitrous being the main benefit of producing power. As oxygen is what is required for a good burn.
But I beg to differ on the temperature having little benefit on power.
The coldness of the gas is a by product of it changing state ( from a liquid to a gas ) Although this coldness is a by product it does have it's benifit,
The temperature controls density. Meaning; room temp gas has a specific density, But the same gas when colder has a greater density. An exaple of this is; If you blow up a balloon, it will be full. Now if you take this balloon an place it in the freezer it will shrink and look like it is going down. If now you take this balloon and place it in the sun, when it warms up it will have expanded to its original size. ( this is the reason the nitrous bottles temp is regulated - to keep the correct pressure to supply the correct amount of gas)
Now if you look at Nitrous itself, Like you said it's molecules are tighter bound than atmospheric air. If this gas was colder it's molecules would be even more tightly bound.
So effectivelly the temp of the nitrous when it gets to the combustion chamber controls how much of the gas can be drawn into the chamber. The more gas the higher the oxygen content and the better the burn.
This is why direct nitrous injection is more effecient than a fogger kit, as the gas gets to the combustion chamber with less heat soak and has a higher density.
I have never been to a nitrous website and I have also never experimented with nitrous so I could still possibley be incorrect but I do belive the temperature does have a big effect on power.
