Reverse gear is the only moveable gear in a 56-series gearbox

 Re: FS5C56A sliding gear
Abit of a typo correction mate.
These is a F5C56A not a FS5C56A.

Quote from tech wiki,
Quote:
Never available in pre-56A form (F5C56 does not exist) meaning that all the improvements to the 56L are applied to the 5-speed

So 56A got improvements and slightly wider gears than the 56L gearboxes.
What you won't read on tech wiki is that these gearbox actually has wider and larger gears than the F4W56A gearboxes. The one i did a comparison to was the late F4W56A off a 1984 ute.

These is the only A-series gearbox that uses the Porsche patented synchromesh system.
So if you open up your 56A 5 speed and it doesn't have these synchromesh system, you don't have a 56A 5 Speed Nismo close ratio gearbox. You have a F5W56A Gx5 5 speed gearbox. And while they might share the same gearbox casings, internally, they are very different.

i.e Note the gear and gear tooth design and "how it sits on top of the steel rings" as opposed to normal gearbox with warner synchromesh rings. Also when the gear in these gearbox is fully engaged, the synchro hub doesn't go "completely over the gear engagement teeth due to the step". I will try and get the comparo pics i took.might explain better than my grammar lol

Also unlike the 60A series 4 speed and 5 speed gearboxes, gears 1-4 are not the same when it comes to 56A series 4speeds and F5C56A 5 speeds.

 Re: FS5C56A sliding gear
Thanks for the correction. Yes it was a typo as F5C56A has no "S" in it. The "FS" signifies Floor Shift, but I forgot they only added S to the later 5-speeds

"C" specifies Porsche synchros, "W" is for Warner synchros. The factory GX5 gearbox has Porsche-type synchros

F4W56A vs F5C56A synchros

Prob another typo hehe

The factory Gx5 gearbox (F5W56A) does NOT have the Porsche type synchros.

Only the Nismo F5C56A does.

The catalogues only refer to these 56A 5 speed gearboxes as option 1 and option 2 so some might assume its the same gearbox but only with different ratios....but they are very different internally.Different gears, layshaft, synchromesh system etc

According to the B110 factory parts catalog, the GX5 uses the steel ring synchros

Here is a scan straight out of the Datsun service parts catalog

dd,
ive noticed some catalogs contradict each other sometimes...
Just a couple of weeks ago on another thread, found out NZ manual/catalogue contradicted other manuals regarding 56L 4 speed close ratio gearboxes..

Factory Gx5 gearbox is a F5W56A.

Wow, one of those is incorrect. I have updated the 56-series article to reflect this

 Re: FS5C56A sliding gear
Il try and get pics of an opened up gx5 gearbox and add to the forum album.ive come across them in japanese language blogs and build projects.

All the pics ive come across of opened up gx5 gearboxes (F5W56A), all had the "normal" warner synchros, not the patented porsche type synchromesh.

I have seen that too, Pitroad will convert your 5-speed to Warner synchros for $5500. Also I've seen a conversion on a blog page. Apparently the C synchros are getting very hard to find.
