Re: PIARC track day April 2008
had a total of 4 sessions.
ran 2:15's for a couple laps by lagwagons time keeping during the 3rd session.
then in the 4th had a couple issues with coolant, revs and i think a head gasket while flying up the front straight !!
luckily on the last lap of the seesion
will find out a bit more tomorrow when i have a proper look at it all

was great fun and an awesome track !!!
thanks to lags for the pics, got quite a few nice ones

no idea on top speed up the straight but in the car it felt ok ...
6k - 5th gear into turn 1
5k - 4th gear into turn 2
6k back to 3rd gear for honda
and flat to the floor in 4th up over lukey heights and down into MG, hard on the brakes and back into 3rd for the corner
then hard on the gas round turn 11 into the straight

Re: PIARC track day April 2008
traction was good ... i use 6" Avon semi slicks on 5.5" rims all round, and at $40odd a corner i'm happy. the tyres are ex formula ford fronts. i'd be keen to try the 7" but need to get some wider rims ... so if anyones got some i'm looking for 13x6.5" or 13x7" rims

no suspension issues ... the fronts are coilovers on cut down bodies so travels fine. i have 175kg springs on them so theres not alot of movement with only the weight of an A series.

off now to have a quick look at the engine trouble ...

theres plenty of room on the track Ange ... you'd fit easy

Good on you Adrian,

Looks like the weather was also on your side. PI would have to be one of the premier circuits in the country. Lots of fun to be had.... 2:15 is a great time for essentially a street car.

Hey great pics!

I'm totally jealous myself, still haven't been around PI.

I guess a headgasket on an A banger is not such a big deal. 2:15 is a great time considering how much (or little) horsepower you have. I hope you let leigh know about his 2:05 with about FOUR TIMES the power!

Re: PIARC track day April 2008
well some good news today !!
spoke to the mech that looks after the datto ...

coughin and splutterin on the straight would have been the carbs running out of fuel, the only time it happened i had really pushed it thru the last few turns before the staight and held it down the straight. Solution will be to put an electric pump in line and have it on an aux switch for track days to keep fuel up to the mech pump, or just a single elec pump and regulator, doing away with the mech pump.

coolant explosion should be nothin to worry about if i'm not using coolant and theres no water in the oil, which there isn't. the cooling system will be flushed and tested as well as the head gasket in the near future.

the diff is more than likely that the crown and pinion gears are now thro away items
2 big track days with longish type corners with a bit of speed thru them and the centre has probably been running dry with the oil sitting up in the axel
so a pull apart of the diff is order for a close inspection, baffles will be welded into the axel shafts and a way of squeezing a bit more oil into the housing will be looked at.

so fingers crossed on the centre be OK still, and i'll more than likely be on the lookout for a 4.11 crown and pinion to suit a H165 diff if anyones got one lying around let me know !1

judging from that response you've been bitten by the racing bug

i dont get what happened to the tappet noise? and the coolant explosion?

if the fuel pump is not keeping up i'd do away with the mech pump and run a nice electric one with a reg.

the long sweeping corners ay PI played havock with my fuel system so the fluid surge mus be a common thing.

good to hear its not so bad

Re: PIARC track day April 2008
re: tappets - mech said that after the 2 track days and the fact that they haven't been adjusted for 6k odd miles its probably all it was.
coolant o/flow bottles not sealed so if it's had a big burst it'll blow out some ... mech said we'll look at it when i get the other bits sorted ? i trust him, he's been doing it a loooong time
will probably look at the single pump and reg option for the fuel and maybe up the line dia ...

which response has given you the idea the race bugs bitten ??

Adrian,

The bug has got you!
Fuel surge is a big problem especially at Phillip Island. Coming on to the main straight (big left hand sweeper) I would suggest a surge tank to electric and fuel pumps is required. One feeding the surge tank and one feeding the engine.

Cheers
Mark
