I read and saw pictures in a old Car Mag ,, That nissan was testing rotary engines in Datsun 1200 coupe s when they were new .. But they never went in to production ..

b120dat - rotary's are awesome but dont get any ideas that they are cheap. very heavy on insurance and my dads uses more fuel than my mums SS commodore.

About rotary's being cheap, as far as i know they are cheaper to build or get power from compared to a piston engine
thats what ive heard anyway

ye its cheap to pull the horses out of them. my mates got a rx3 he spent $7500 and hes running mid 11s its just they cost alot to maintain and the insurance is collossal but i suppose the cheap horses make up for all of that.

Many aviation engine suppliers have their versions as there arent pollution laws in airoplanes. There are alloy versions that weigh almost as much as the a-series with 10 times the power. The beauty of them is you only modify the ports and fuel delivery for power they are simple and racing beat offers alum side and end housings to drop weight down 30kgs (although not cheap) still cheaper than a pitroad a15.
With the little support roters have they still rule for size and weight and wallet.
If its small nimble and cheap I support it.

B120dat. That site is in US prices.
To buy an import motor and gearbox and have motor and turbo reco'd in standard form would cost you close to $4000 i'm guessing.

Then you would need an aftermarket computer (could get away with a microtech or something crap for $500 to $1000) thats if you use a series 2 dizzy which will run you another couple of hundred bucks.

Then you'll need a low pressure fuel pump, high pressure fuel pump, and surge tank...hmm, another $800-$1000

Then you'll need to look at engine/gearbox mounts, tailshaft, diff and brakes.

It won't be cheap, but on the up side...even with only minor power upgrades, you will beat any of the ca18det's that I have seen.

Good luck getting it registered though.

Hope that helped you a bit

Why would you need an aftermarket computer? The stock turbo engine works well.

I'm sure Mazda has many patents. However the one you're referring to is the 'NSU' patent for the basic wankel-type rotary engine design. Every car maker took out at least a temporary license to build rotories using this patent. Mazda licensed this from NSU; Mazda did not invent the rotary, Mr. Wankel did. One rotor or two, doesn't matter as they use the basic design the patent covers. Chevrolet displayed a three-rotor mid-engined Corvette back around 1975.

Some motorcycles use a rotary-valve engine, which is a piston engine with a different valve train (no poppet valves). Which bikes uses a wankel-type engine?

That is right, Mazda just got the patent bought from NSU, did not invented it, but perfected it for commercial mass production. Mazda is the only one that could make rotary cars for mass production, up untill the patent expires. That does not mean other car makers cannot work on developing a rotary, I'm sure they are, but can not commercialize them. Mazda has years of experience, I doubt somebody will surpass them in the rotary technology any time soon, but again, you never know.
About the cost of the computer and turbos, you can always get started with sidedrafts or IDA's.
Jaime.

I know this is an old thread but to answer the question suzuki made a production rotary motor bike for a few years. I know a chap who has one, extremely rare in Aus.

 Re: supercharged 13B 1000
Thanks to the 13b turbo small cheap cars have been able to compete with big money redneck v8s. If it wasnt for the oil crisis, nissan would have its own as it did start experimenting just prior to it. Imagine we'd all be driving nissan rotors against mazda rotors on the drag strip and the over 2ltr SS class. Although rotary designs have been around for 400 years!!! The combustion engine rotary version has received 1% of development compared to poppet valves and pistons. Rednecks have banned rotaries in 1983 in Oz cause they were going to win a 3rd Oz touring title and the same happened to Nissans GTR by banning all turbos. Its good to back nimble underdogs and those that dare to be different. Mazda should be considered nissan's ally as its the competition that makes nissan strive for a better product in its own homeland. As much as I love the A series it represents budget power and to get it to do an 8 second pass would cost 10 times the money of a 13b. I think theres room for both in our budget power world "Long live the A-series and fellow Rotaries."

 Re: supercharged 13B 1000
Hear, hear. Just like the Datsun 1000s/1200s are the "small cars that can", so is the Mazda rotary "the small engine that can". It stands out in an absolute way.

Only Mazda had the guts (or the desperation) to continue to improve the Wankel design, though it was inferior at the start. The result is that now it is a fine reliable engine. There's been a lot said of royalty fees, but I think the main reason the other car makers stopped rotary development was because they were having success with the piston engine. Now only Mazda owns the many Mazda-researched detail improvements, it seems unlikely any other maker will produce a rotary, I wonder.

Do we know of any 9-second A-series engines? The physical size, weight and displacement of the 13B is similar to the a-type engine. The a-series engines are fine engines (very excellent!), but then so are others like the Toyota AGs. But the rotary is outstanding.

Oh yeah ... since the 1200 rotary-swap has been done so often and is a proven process, it would be more interesting to see a Nissan QR25 swap or other engine.

hmm...someone hasn't driven a good 13b, cause its not a pity at all!

Anyway this would have to be oz's quickest supercharged rotary. Since most of them are turbocharged

Madtimo,
Pity about the 13B! 1200ute8u1 wouldn't have driven a 13B because he is not old enough to drive. He wouldn't know a fast car if he was hit by one.

Hey guys, as much as I love Datsuns, I got to say I love rotary engines, and as soon as the patent expires on Mazda, Nissan will be able to bring one of its own. What was said before is my biggest mindbreaker, the fact that I love my A15 engine, but to make it run like a rotary, God knows I can not afford that project, a Rotary will give you power, it has less parts to worry about(no valves, cams, lifters, cyl head/pistons,etc. It is all fun, a rotary is not that anti Datsun, it is just another means of producing power with combustion. The engine is small, light, so it is excelent for our small cars,A series are cool too, I have no problem with rotaries, and rotaries are meant to be rear wheel drive, so that keeps them in our turf.

i love anything old school and to me rotaries are old school and loads of fun, best of both worlds own two with either combustion type that'll make everyone happy.

regarding convinience and power the rotary is definately the way to go.

When I'm next at the track if I remember my camera I'll get a pic or 2 of the rotary bike.
Its a new deal they are trying to get together at the moment and it looks like it has potential if they can get it to the end of the track.
next meeting is Top Doorslammer and Top Bike so I'll try to remember the camera.

And yes Bretts 1000 is the fastest blown rotary and at one stage held the top rotary in Oz title.
