From here it looks a bit like a 60's era Isuzu Bellet on drugs. A local bloke around here has a couple of the rare 2 door GT versions. They are not as well styled as our Datsuns.

Yep and it's fast too. 51.46 according to the link in the other thread. These are really cool cars and were relatively fast out of the box with solexes stock but they're really prone to rust so there aren't that many left.

beg to differ!

the same italian designer (bellini? bertoni? b-something anyways) designed the Mazda 1500/1800, Mazda RX2, Datsun P310/P410, fiat toppolino (bambino 500) etc etc.

any curvy car like that from the 60s / early 70s is pretty much his design and/or influence.

datsun got the "low cost" design look. thing is, datsun and chrysler got it right, everyone else flunked miserably.

I had a good look at the local Bellett GT's one day. I was OK with the body style, but the GT's roofline was not in the race when compared to the Datsuns. The four door Bellett has a better roofline,.... in my view. The three quarter glass [behind the door] just seems too big & out of proportion for my liking.

I believe that these things were powered by a Japan-ised Hilman engine of 1600cc The Isuzu engineers did three things to the engine that the Brits never could. They...
Stoped it leaking oil
Overcame ALL the reliability problems
Made it go very well.

These were a cult car for a while. Everyone with a four door secretly wished it was a GT. The GT's i looked at used Hitachi carbs very much like the ones on the 1200GX engine.

Anyway, the better performance of the faster of the two Belletts entered, over the 1200 coupes, would have been assisted by its 1800cc engine.

Aaarrrrgh, gotta put some struts in the front of this car . Thanks for the photo Ben (and to Chris who took it !) yes, getting quicker but would love more stick than the 1400 is putting out at present. That's what you get for selecting the wrong cam profile . Hopefully the 1500 will be ready for next year .
A good day had by all !!!
Cheers

Jeff the car is nicely poised through the corner...if the unloaded wheel is still on the ground offering grip it is pretty well balanced
