experiment 1:

been running for 2 months really pleased with the end result but i will say this:

AINT NOTHING COMPARED TO A CA18DET!!!!!!!!!!

but it is a good exercise in understanding how a turbo system works and developing Hp out of a simple but everso reliable A-series engine, anyone has any questions feel free to ask.

How have you mounted the turbo?

It looks like you have used the standard intake and exhaust manifolds.

Since height in the engine bay is an issue in the 1k compared to the 1.2k.

Can you take some more Pics of the turbo mounting setup. I have turbo plans for my 1k also, so more information on this bit would be nice.
Cheers

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
For this first set up i used the standard intake and exhaust manifold, i used a 'J'pipe off the end of the exhaust manifold which is what the turbo is bolted to. I did f@#k the height of the 'top hat' in the 1000 it sticks out the bonnet(bonnet scoop will fix that) because i used the holley its heaps taller than what it should be, only due to the fact that there is 2 adapters, one for a down draft webber and then one for the holley, top hat sticks out 35mm from the bonnet and the two adapters(which i welded together) comes to 45mm. Next set up wont stick out the bonnet!

the reason i used a holley is i first used my 32/36 weber but had problems when under boost, my uncle who loves his V8's suggested that i use a holley, i took his advice(for once!!!!) i had to change the floats from plastic to brass and change the jets, it doesnt run out of fuel under boost now, runs better than the webber.

Whats the T25 out of?
When does it come on boost?
How many 4spds and H145s have you broken ?

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
The turbo(T25) was off my CA18DET. The turbo is in need of a rebuild, smokey on idle.

It comes on boost 3000-4000 Rpm running only 9 psi at the moment, sounds like a F1-11 when it starts to wind up

No gearboxes or diffs broken yet!(touchwood!!!!!) i put a CIG diff in it(welded), i've never been so sideways in my life, definatly puts a smile on your face!!!!!!!!

The brakes need doing! drum brake is not good for a turbo(no #### i hear everyone saying!)

So the turbo is only conected to the engine via the exhaust pipe?

do you expect it to hold there for long?

I recognise that this is version 1.0 so I know that not everything will be perfect.

WHAT??????????????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Firstly; i'm a boiler maker by trade,

Second:The pipe that come off the exhaust manifold is made from 5mm steam pipe, it aint going no where!!!! its also connected to the dump pipe, it doesnt go no-where!!!!! i guarentee it!!!! have a look at other photos in the photo album alot of people use this very principal as a simple and cheap way of making a manifold, not that efficent as a full custom manifold but it works nether the less.

I had no intention of suggesting that the setup was dodgy, or that your work was in any way poor. I couldnt fab up something like that. I dont have the skills, so full credit to you. I thought that you should always bolt the turbo to the block with some sort of braket somehow. I totally believe you in that its not going anywhere. If you dont need a bracket then you dont need one.

Was just questioning how you had done it was all. I am in a similar boat with my 1k and am trying to get a handle on this turbo business since I have always been a NA fan.

My comment about it bieng the first version was simply an admission that not everything goes to plan first go. (like the carb height you mentioned)

basically my apologies if I offended you in any way.

Looks good.

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000

The funniest thing just happened!!!!!!

i was on the way home this evening, i pulled up at a set of lights and a 'p' plater in an older XR6, with a car full of wankers, they all took one look at my humble 1000 and started pissing themselves laughing,

"what a peice of s@#t!!!!" the wanker in the front passenger seat said.

"right!" i thought to myself.

when the lights turned green, I SMOKED 'EM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! over took them while sidways!!!!!!!!
Beat them by at least 3 car lengths!

next set of lights and they were all hanging out the window saying s@#t like "fully sick bro!!"

"what a bunch of wankers!" i said
started wiggling my little finger at them

OH WHAT A FEELING!, A-SERIES POWER!!!!!

Beware of all the dato 1000's in the land!!!
looks can be decieving! things might not appear as the are!

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
i originally used the plastic floats and they were crushed within seconds, they brass ones seems to be holding up fine so far, as long as i don't run too much boost.i cant remeber the exact size of the jets, i think all the satchel bag said it was a size or number 6, somthing like that, can't remeber exactly what it is.

yeah i have plans for an intercooler need make more plumbing and mount it.

Anyone with a decent T25? mines is a bit smokey on idle, seals could be on the way out?

Steveo

its stories like that that drive me further for a series power!!!!

its just great to hear stories like that. I have 1 or 2 similar to that about my 1k when it was in its best tuned state. Its not so flash now, but mk2 is coming. Watch out Perth!

THANKS!!! it'll put a smile on my dial for a fortnight!!!!!

i'm really happy how well it goes, exceeds all of my expectations, but i will say it again-'aint nothing compared to a ca 18det!' but for what it is (A14) its awesome! really fun to drive except when you go for the anchors! it gets a bit hairy! to say the least. Definatley needs a brake upgrade kit from Neal, thats the next thing on my list, it goes and now i need to stop!!! it would be nice!

Are you running a rising rate fuel regulator?
I don't blame you for using a holley. I'm going to dump my weber for a holley. The holley bowls have better sealing. Have you externally referenced the power valve? I have blanked mine off.

No i havent worried about a fuel reg, only running 9psi on a new motor, seems to keep up.Have you still got the supercharger running a14force?

WHATS WRONG WITH ESCARGO??????????????
dont u like snails????? they are good for ya! bennificial to your health i say!!!! i think you'll see alot more a-series turbo popping up everywhere, not only in 1000's. Seem to be fashionable these days!!! and relitively cheap compared to a full CA conversion, my motor all up from start to finish and all the different bits and peices cost just under $3000, not bad i reakon, don't know what sort of Hp it makes but its very fun to drive

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
you could do a setup like this to any motor for less than 1000 bucks wats a carby worth 250 on a manifold? turbo about 250 for t25, few hundred buck in steel and fuel lines maybe fuel reg 150 and then just extras like air filter and piping, wouldnt be too hard either...

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
i would probably go for a drawthrough setup if its a budget build and for its simplicity
use an SU style carb
use an rx7 turbo off a twin turbo setup as they have a carbon seal these are better as the seals wont be ruined from the fuel passing through
larger electric fuel pump would be a good idea to
and some steel and hoses for piping it all up
also will need to lock the advance to stop it advancing or it will cause problems
most of this stuff can be picked up from swapmeets for a reasonable price

also search for topgears turbo setup its a simple drawthrough setup and made very good power for an old tired a12

Re: my experimental a-series turbo in a dato 1000
your so right kegs! this set up cost just under $1000, to get running right, and that was with a dyno session! and it has acheived some stunning results, with this set up its so simple and easy it beggers belief! with the addition of an intercooler and some other bits and peices it should be even better!

As for Draw-through set up,personally, i honstly wouldn't bother. I've built both set ups and the blow-though is way better! better to tune and alot better performance, and alot more reliable and drivable!

But hey! what ever floats your boat! people have built them with good results, and others have built them with ordinary results and gone to the next step. but we're all different.

Not sure what topgear did to his set up to achieve the numbers that he got but it is impressive nether the less, i think it was a smokey motor but a fair bit done to the head and a good tune i suspect, but i have nothing to back that up.

I know what works for me and i'm sticking with it! lol
