1000's and 1200's use the same steering box and both have a 15:1 ratio on the worm. Sunny's use approx 16.5:1 ratio worm and have a different mounting bolt pattern which makes them difficult to fit to an earlier car. Last trip I had to the wreckers, I noticed that early corrollas use a similar box as 1000/1200's and might be interchangable. MY 1000 steering box is an NSK unit so it is possible that there are different ratios available elsewhere.

As a different idea, I've been toying with the idea of a longer pitman arm and idler arm to increase the throw or a reduced length steering arm on the other end. I intend to make a sensative wheel angle measuring jiggy thingy and setup the whole steering angle for best track performance.

As another interesting note, I've reviewed some incar camera movies from Eeastern Creek and have noted that on just about every single corner, the steering wheel has between 80 and 100 degrees rotation. And the corners with 100 degrees are when I'm experienceing understeer, while 80 degree rotation is usually on oversteer corners (for my car with its current setup). This is the case for sweeping turn 1 right down to hairpin at turn 9!

Daniel.

the old rally trick is shortened steering arms. BUT, you need to find someone who has a jig for the particular arm you want to shorten, and who knows their stuff because welding cast iron isn't easy. And it may not technically be legal for your catergory (if someone notices). It definitely isn't road legal (not relevant here).

My 1200 just had the standard steering ratio. I remember regularly having more than 180deg oppy lock on the 1200 at racetracks, but that might be just me... If you keep it relatively smooth like you rarely go more than 90deg with the wheel anyway as qik1000 said, so you can prety much keep your hands in position on the wheel even with the standard steering ratio.

But I have driven a few cars with quicker steering - a mates 1600 track car and another mates Stanza rally car, both with shortened steering arms, and the GTR, and its a much nicer feeeling. Probably not worth any time on a track car, but in a rally situation with lots of lock involved its definitely an advantage.

HI daniel,
Some great info there.. I have to run standard pitman and idler arms for ipra regs,
Your steering input angle info will be helpful when i set up the ackerman on the weekend. altho this will require a bit of track testing to get exactly right.

Thanks L18 b110,
Its getting fairly tight between the R32 calipers and the standard length steering arm. if i were to shorten the arms i think the tie rod end nut might hit on the caliper... It will be worth a measure tho. I`ll see how far i have to bend the arms in to get the ackerman right..

Thanks Killer 1200,
Ive just bent the arms in to increase toe out on turns(ackerman). I might just see how the standard length arms go to start with.. but if i see some 310 arms I`ll measure them to see if there is a diference.

Those a shortened 310 that are made that way there not your stock 310 arms.

Are 210 and 310 arms the same ?

I know there is a nismo one for 1600s.However I've never seen one for a 1200.

On pitroad they have shorter steering arms.

I cant get the site to work other wise I would post the link.

After more looking I found some people run shortened Stanza radius rods and steering arms because even after you cut and weld them there still stronger than the stock ones.
