Nice - will you be making a custom vane for the rotor or is there something already available out there?

TnPshow.
There are 4 segment chopper wheels available, I have 1 or 2 stored somewhere.
Aparrently, the chopper wheels are included with replacement sensor kits that Auto Electricians fit to distributors
Jaycar detail how to make one from a metal cup that is actually a potentiometer rear cover.
However, if you don't cut the slots accurately, the sensor will scatter the timing really well
One degree out at the chopper wheel is two crank degrees, etc.
I'm sure it can be made from scratch, but I don't need to.
I have already grafted a chopper wheel to the rotor of an FJ20 dist. when I fitted a HES to it.
These sensors are really the DUCKS GUTS. Truly a set and forget timing system
They don't like excessive heat though, so make sure that any heat, i.e. #1 exhaust pipe on an L series engine, is well insulated away from the dist. body.

This sensor is intended for a distributor environment.
You are talking about a toothed wheel/crank angle sensor setup.
There are other pickups made specially for that arrangement, there is one on eBay as we speak.

This arrangement is quite different to what I intend to do, but is still a very good system.
After all, the crank angle is indicated by a sensor on the, you know, crank
