Re: Ute and GX bonnet During the 1980's there was a very large market in Australia for used parts for Japanese cars, but not enough wrecks in the yards to supply the demand, so importers were placing orders with Japanese wreckers for large quantities of parts.
The suppliers in Japan had ontly the JDM cars to supply from, so they simply filled up containers with stuff. Of course, some of the parts were the same as ours, & some were not. I was gifted half a 1200 coupe grille for the asking when I bought a quantity of stuff somewhere. I wanted it for the GX 5 speed badge on it & since I was running a GX with 5 speed in my 1000, I put it on the grille. It's still there. [I can't get it off]
Bits like this were turning up in these containers all the time & that's how my 5 speed came into the country, along with my 1200 GX induction.
On many occasions the Australian sellers did not fully understand what they had & a lot of stuff, like these bonnets, were sold off at the same price as standard bonnets. [sometimes not] I don't know what my GX 5 badge is worth today, but back then, it was not a standard emblem, so it was almost unsaleable, which is why he gave it to me for the asking.
My B10 'S' emblem was on an imported grille & was also mine for the asking as it wasn't a standard 'D' emblem, so nobody wanted it.
This same situation applied to all the Jap makes, but Datsuns seem to have benefited more than the others.

Re: Ute and GX bonnet Thats some good info Dodge.... I just assumed that most of the parts just came on imported 1200s and then were broken up over years. I guess you lived and experienced these datto years. Good to know

Re: Ute and GX bonnet As ddgonzal has pointed out, these are not exclusively 'GX' bonnets, but instead they were used on the JDM facelift models from mid 1972 onwards.
I know that GX & GL models got them, but I don't know about the Deluxe & Standard models yet. [confirmation anyone?] Export models & The South African built cars still retained the earlier bonnet, so it looks to be a Japan-only thing.
Having said all that, ... it looks absolutely terrific & a couple of rubbers, as you have said, will make it perfect. I'm looking forward to being able to install mine.

Re: Ute and GX bonnet Yes your correct, but there known more as a GX bonnets in oz because there were more GX models brought to Australia which had these hoods than the JDM series 1200s. I dont think standard or Deluxe models had these bonnets, they are just so bloody hard to find, there is basically none in South Africa and they are rare item in Japan too, so I have heard.

Re: Ute and GX bonnet Haha yeah...... They dont know what the hell your there doing, couldnt finger paint on a good day..... wait thats the owner Narh Chris came up good mate, just a couple of spots like you said would need bit more work, havent done the hand wax'ing yet, couldnt find the stuf at Super Rice. Certainly gives it a tuffer look compared to a stock bonnet I think. See there is a QDPC coming up mate!.... Think we should start some work on the CA sedan and get it out there mate!
