Nicely done. Very good idea to cover it with vinyl.

 Re: Hard cover
Yeah it is made from 16mm MDF.
I covered the top in black vynal, and the underside is trimmed in carpet.
I've got it on gas struts and have two central locking motors to lock it. (Although you can still obviously get into the tray from opening the tailgate)
The ute doesn't see any rain, so if you were to use MDF, you would have to coat it with fiberglass resin.
It has been on there for about a year and is doing ok.

did you reinforce the back with steel. i made the same mistake when i made mine. the aluminium i used wasnt welded and it ended up diping in the middle

 Re: Hard cover
Well yeah, but not steel.
I used 40x40mm laminated pine.
Which runs across the width of the board.
And a bit of extra reinforcment where the gas struts are mounted.
This was a bit of a prototype, as I wasn't sure how it would look and if it would last.

It is a bit weighty, (approx 20kgs) all up.

If I make another one, I will use 9mm and modify the braces to suit.

But, so far it has been fine.
And there is no signs of sagging or warping.
