was changing from 3rd to 4th, when I let the clutch out and put foot I almost hit my head in the steering wheel in anticipation of the acceleration.

 Re: Mmmmm, there
I always suspected the bell of not being 100% parallel, or being misaligned between the hole on the block side and the holes on the box side. This just confirms that. How else would the plate develop a stress fracture like this, if it's not constantly running "bent" because the spigot is running though it at an angle. Luckily it broke just when I hooked the next gear and not while still accelerating through the gears.

What a shame after all that work on the custom bellhousing.

Ag I'll just go out and get another, apparently there is another company casting these, but much better. The plate cost me R850 and the bell R800, So not to much damage to the pocket, considering how long the lot lasted, what it's almost been 8 months now without any break whatsoever...

 Re: Mmmmm, there
what was it like to drive before it broke?

Also is it just me or does it look like only the outside edges of the friction material were making contact?

Never been a big fan of solid clutches myself - and this is why
Looks like a heat affected area on the left - perhaps an earlier crack was welded up?? If so, then it was sure to fail

Sprung centre every time for me
Hope you didn't shear any flywheel bolts!
Cheers

Nah, was a brand new clutch plate, it's just because the bell housing wasn't lining up properly, or because the two faces was machined out of parallel. If you look at the other picture below, you will see where the spigot rubbed against the plate, I presume while the engine was still running after it broke, that's what ground the blue roundish place on the left hand side. The spigot should be ok, just want to file the burs away with a triangle file. The bearings also have almost no play, and don't sound rough, so no need to even open it up.

I would look also at how square the flywheel was machined as the wear pattern on the clutch buttons certainly isn't even.
