Re: disks craking and pads finished
I could have had them machined for free, as in beer, since my dad works in an automotive machine shop as a fitter and turner. But I elected to fit new stuff, because my life is worth more to me than R500 odd that the new parts cost... And I figured that even the +/-1mm that is lost due to wear and skimming will make a difference to their performance.

Those rotors were the ones I bought with the struts when I was building the car, and yes the pads were the ones that came from the wreckers as well(naugthy naughty)...

i know the disc looks bad but i doubt you needed to replace em machining would get rid of those surface cracks i have worse than this on my ca18det flywheel and a small lick off the surface got rid of what looked like deep cracks.

@kegs

The thing is that brand new discs are cheaper to buy than machining the old ones.
Brand new ones cost something like R60 each (ZA rand). The labour for maching the discs is here where I live R250 (ZA rand).

Is that for the machining?

This for new discs?

Damn. Here in some places the labour is more expensive than the parts. Not all bakkie parts are this cheap however. For example the 5 speed gearboxes are available second hand easily, but are damn expensive. And they are not even strong.

We also got the Stanzas. They are quite plenty in the scrapyards, but located in other parts of the country. The Stanza stuff I thought of when I wanted to upgrade my front struts, but with the courier costs and also to buy them from the wrecker, cost the same as what I paid for 2005 Nissan 1400 bakkie struts with only 35000km on the clock.
So I went for the brand new stuff instead of Stanza stuff that I would have hoped are in good condition as I would have bought them without seeing them. I think this is the same case with Kulula.

Ahh I see, datsun's are a-plenty over here. Theres nothing like spending the afternoon at u-pull-it wreckers with a measuring tape working out good swaps. Sometimes you can be really lucky and they will have a 1200, then you can try the swaps to make sure they fit.

What nissans/datsun's did you ZA guys get through the 80's?

Because all you need is the strut body and bits to fit it in the car, the rest can be bought new, I think it just saves all the adapting of calipers and driling of discs etc.

I didnt mind the drums or even my coupe discs for driving around nice and slow but you guys are going pretty quick, especially Francois! I know i've cooked my fair share of brakes and its one area I think should be overdone, definitely not overlooked as in most cases.

Re: disks craking and pads finished
I'm taking it out for night drags at Killarney on Friday night, so I thought I'd treat it to some new disks ad pads in front, the old ones were worn out anyway.

Below you can see the pics as I went through the process. Of particular interest is how I always pack wheel bearings. Take a blob of grease in your one hand's palm, and hold the bearing as in the pic, then lightly tap the wide side of the bearing on the edge of the grease. Al the while taking little bites out of the blob, within 6-7 taps the grease should start coming out the other side of the bearing, now rotate the whole bearing and repeat until the whole bearing is done. Doing this insures that there is some slippery stuff in every nook and cranny. I have never had a bearing fail after I replaced it using this packing method.

Furthermore as to the amount of grease in the hub. When I took the lot apart, there was just enough grease to fill the hollow gap between the two bearing outers, this is the same amount I put back in. Sometimes one tends to over fill this, and that's when the grease starts to come out when it shouldn't.

That should stop a little better! Are they bakkie struts and brakes?

My old drum struts were funny, I had grease all over the place after a run down the freeway, I wore through the shoes in a week with the L16. Now it has MR30 struts and brakes with all new pads and remachined discs, even got new dust covers for the hubs so no more grease everywhere.

Yes they are, and in the almost year I have been driving the car with these, I have never had a overheating problem, or run out of brakes. However, lately there's been that roaring kind of noise when you stepped on the brake, and you could feel some vibration through the pedal. That's trying to stop from past where the clock reads, and when I checked them I saw the cracks and stuffed pads. So out they went...

I still want to bleed the lines a bit, just to get rid of the old fluid close to the pad and disk. That's just to make sure I don't have some water or bad fluid in the lines.

I've been thinking about doing some upgrade, but I want to do it in such a way that you could simply walk into any shop and purchase replacements, as easy as it is to replace these original ones.

1 man bleeder using compressed air is your friend!!

I've done 3 1200 strut/brake upgrades now. All 3 have the brakes that came with the strut except with rebuilt or new parts. That way I just buy replacement stuff for the chosen strut, easy!

My partners 1200 has stanza struts shortened to take 300zx inserts.

My daily 1200 has Mr30 struts with koni inserts and bmw sports springs and lower seat.

The racecar has 280zx struts with weld on coilover kit etc. I have 2 sets of pads for this, porterfield soft pads and ebc greenstuff.

All 3 bolt in using stanza lower arms/steering arms and outer tierod ends, 1200 strut top etc.

The bad thing is that we in ZA don't have alot of those car available in the scrapyards.
The other thing is that I don't like Stanza stuff because it is already old stuff. That is why Kulula and myself both installed brand new Nissan 1400 bakkie struts.I don't know the year model of his set but mine is 2005 with only 35000km on them. The calipers still have the golden color like brand new ones.

Francois
As discussed previously, I know someone with a 1400 bakkie with a brake upgrade of the following:
1. Nissan Almera discs.(apparently no drilling is required to make it fit.I presume it is then fitted like modern cars.Clamped between hub and rim.
2. Ford Focus calipers.(I don't know specifically why these ones.I would prefer here also Nissan Almera to keep things simple)

The trick is that I want to see if it will fit under 13" rims. The bakkie that currently has this setup has 15" rims.

I also need to replace my discs. My steering very lightly shudders when braking and I can also feel it on the brake pedal. Brand new discs at Engine Parts are R60 each. A disc skim job is R250. mmmm, now which one must I do.
