Re: ID plate on 1200 diff
As you can see it's a 3.89:1 ratio, I thought my car would have the 4.11:1, and was glad when I opened another diff I got which was 3.89, so saw mine was the same when I opened it up. I know the other one took some abuse in my b-in-law's CA18DET 1200. So I'm going to use mine rather, but lock the thing in place.

Also I measured the crown wheel, and it's 165mm across, which if I have it correct means that it is a H165. It's a Borg Warner btw...

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone knows what the center portion(the 2 halfs that bolts to the crown) is made of, is it cast iron, or is it steel. I'f it's steel, I'm just gonna go ahead and weld the gears straight to the two center portion halfs, and not bother locking the planetary gears.

One other thing, does anyone know what the torque settings are for the crown wheel bolts?

Here's a picture of the complete set of parts that makes up the center portion.

I'm sure dd would be able to translate the hirogliphics on that little plate into something more understandable for us ordinay folk...

Ah, yes. The elusive Borg Warner Model 68 (see wiki).

- 43100-HB801 Nissan Part Number. Perhaps specific to Nissan South Africa.
- M 68: Model 68
- Ratio 3.89: 9 pinion teeth to 35 ring teeth. This is quieter than the H145's 10:39 teeth.
- 035-02661 ???

H165 means Hitachi, 165mm ring gear.
So you might call it a BW165. However, I would have though 68 meant 6.8 inches (173mm)?

dd, once again you are the king of Datsun knowledge, or maybe the others are just not as willing to share...

Quiet yes, it wasn't making any noise at all when it was still running in the car, no humming, whining nothing. The teeth are also very smooth and not worn at all.

Ok, so I thought about your 6.8" theory, and realised that I measured it when it was still attached to the centre portion. So I went out just now and measured it properly, yep you guessed right 173mm. I fell into the old parallax trap...

Does anyone know if the two halfs of the center portion is steel or cast iron? The finish on the machined portions suggests steel, but the casting marks on the outside says cast iron. Unless it's drop forged. Also what is the torque specs for the crown gear bolts, and the saddles that holds the center bearings in place. Damn I wish I had a Haynes manual for this thing...

173mm eh? I always thought they were bigger/stronger than the H165, but never measured one. I used them in my old L series coupe. That's a significant increase in size over the much sought after and overpriced H165.

I've never torqued them back up. If you really want torque specs, measure the thread diametre and pitch and you should be able to look up a maximum recommended torque.

I'd just do them F-ing tight on the crownwheel bolts, but do them in stages, working around the crownwheel like you would with wheelnuts. I normally use a rattle gun on the last stage.

the bearing carrier bolts: pretty tight (very technical huh?) use a decent breaker bar to tighten them. you'l find you probably have to wind these in to get the centre back in the housing, just do it evenly - a little on each side and evenly top and bottom - work it in slowly. Make sure you re-install the shims on the correct sides!

the centre is cast. machined parts always look good - like a cast iron flywheel for example.

Francois,

I have a Service manual at home for my stanza with both differentials, I will post back here with the torque specs so you can assemble it properly.

Cheers!

They weld up fine. Just pour the weld in on the bottom side gear and the lower section of the spider gears so that you can sit the outside side gear on properly without the weld interfering. Also when you put it back together dummy assebble first before welding and see how much end float is between the side gear and the carrier and make a shim to tighten it up. Do the same with the carrier hat gear so that when it all bolts together the end result will be a much stronger locker.

I wouldn't worry too much about torque specs. Loctite 262 and a rattle gun tor the crownwheel bolts and cap bolts.

Yeah these will be the colours for the racecar, we've just been playing with photoshop, the cars only in primer at the moment. Im still trying to decide weather to paint the flares black like the roof?

Cool thanks dude, they'll come in handy when I assmble this locked Bw.

In the mean time I've found a M75 Toyota diff which has been shortened already, mounts everything has been done(albeit for a UTE, so I'll have to add mounts for the shocks), but the center is still missing a bearing or two, plus all the bits for the brakes are missing. So I'll still fit the locked BW one for now, but am going to slowly build the M75 up, and maybe look for a LSD and use that rather than locked.

Any idea how much TQ the above diff will hold, im running my race prep A15 to one of these 43100-HB801's (identical to the one in the pic) just wondering if i must start looking for an upgrade nissan diff (ute) or not (cant change brands or out of era diff because its a Marque car and it has to be totaly of era)

Also anyone know of a LSD for this? i spin the inside wheel out almost every corner

cheers

Stronger than H165. BW68 means 6.8 inches, doesn't it? That is 173 mm, the H165 is only 165 mm ring gear diameter.

Maybe 250 lb.ft. torque. Just a guess.

Awsome stuff, any idea if the old tomei LSD's they fitted to the 70's touring sunny's would fit? / is it the actual ring gear that changes or is it the whole center unit changes in size?

The whole differential is different - Borg Warner instead Hitachi. An H165 LSD won't fit a BW
