Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! You should strip it as soon as you get it, to make sure there's no water sloshing around inside, and messing the engine up from the inside out...

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! I wiil be going to fetch the motor later today. Ive spoken to my uncle and he says we might be installing either fuel injection or 2x 36 Webers on the motor, turbo might also be a option. What type of gearbox would we need for it as the UTE does not have one. This UTE will be a toy only, no work or loading on it, so I think a 1200 4 speed will surfice.

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Now don't go spoiling the beauty of a GX by installing that rubbish on the side, stick with the Hitachi's & you will still love it.
The 56A gearbox does not like a lot of torque, which is why it was not used behind the long stroke A14 & A15 engines.
If you are going to stuff a whizz wheel or side suckers on it, then the best bet is probably a 60 series 5 speed from a later model Bakkie as this will help address the short gearing problem that you will have & it's stronger than the 56A gearbox.

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Quote: There are another 2 of these motors laying there and a few A14 motors, but this one caught my eye as it is almost complete. @Velociti Want to ask a BIG something. Can you check if the other 2 has their cylinder heads still on? I am looking for a spare GX cylinder head to modify. If there are 2 I would suggest take one for yourself aswell and throw it on the 1400 and give the other one for me. If he sells a complete engine for R500 then the cylinder head we can score for cheap. Please let me know. Thanks

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Thanks for the info I will definatly be taking this motor.
NO, this motor did not come with the 1000ute we just bought. I can get it from a friend of mine for 500.00 ZAR = 73.5317 AUD. It just been laying around his scrap metal yard for a few months now. The engine is loss as we can spin the fly wheel easily. The only parts missing from the motor is the 2x SU's and the distributor. There are another 2 of these motors laying there and a few A14 motors, but this one caught my eye as it is almost complete. This one has been put away for me.
I think this would be a perfect motor for our new 1000 ute project.

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! I can GUARANTEE that this is an ideal powerplant for the B20 ute as I used one in my B10 sedan for years & years & ...... well, you get the idea.
If the finished product is to be a toy, not a tool, then replace the differential with one from a 1200. This will remove the 4.375 to 1 ratio, which was OK for a 988 cc engine hauling a half ton, to one of 3.9 to 1 that was used in a heavier vehicle with a lower powered engine [than the GX] & still performed very well. You will need bigger diameter tyres as well otherwise you will make it into fourth within 30 yards & be looking for another gear. LOL
The 1200 is close to being a 'bolt in' but I recomend that you use a 56A series trans from a B210 with it.
There were a couple of minor diferences in the GX distributor, so if you can find the original, or another, then get it. Like the 1000, the 1200 GX used only one spring on the mechanical advance weights while regular 1200's used two & from memory, the weights themselves were different.
The fuel pump also uses a different spring under the diaphragm.
The carbs are not SU's but are Hitachi's They look like SU's, but then a Holley looks like a Rochester doesn't it.
Have a good look around & see if you can find any of the missing parts, including the air filter housing & throttle linkage as they are important & will be difficult to source seperately.
The B20 Ute was the lightest B body Datsun of all, so even a stock 1200 GX will make it fly.
1200 4 door Sedan ....... 1,532 Lbs .... 695 Kg B21 Ute ...................... 1,356 Lbs .... 615 Kg You save ........................ 176 Lbs .... 80 Kgs

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Don't bother 'ripping' anything off, it's a 1200GX engine. We can figure out what it is by using our heads, not our toolkit.
The inlet manifold, & rocker cover have been pointed out & the water hose from the manifold is there also. This connects to a fitting on the inlet pipe for the water pump & this pipe is unique to the GX. Removing the oil filler cap will reveal the dual valve springs & that's as dirty as your hands will need to get.
Even the GX exhaust manifold flange is clearly visible in one of the pictures. Note also that there is a fuel line mounting point on the rocker cover near the rear carb position. This confirms the earlier observation that it's a GX rocker cover.
If this isn't a real 1200 GX then someone has gone to an awfull lot of trouble to pretend that it is. Buy it.
Was there ever a 1200 SSS in ZA? I know that there was in New Zealand, but it used dual sidedraughts on a round port engine, & the engine in the pic sure isn't one of those.

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Definitely a GX motor, look where the clip on the rocker cover is for the throttle cable. It's set up for the centre of the 2 carbs, not like the stocker which has it at the back. Take the filler capoff & see if you can spot the twin valve springs.

Re: Advice PLEASE !!!!!!!! Looks like it to me, from memory it has NISSAN stamped on top of the head under the rockers, good score if it is!
Just out of curiosity, did you get this with the 1000 ute?
