I was driving The old girl nigh on as fast as she'd go, when it began losing power. Compression on number four was VERY low. Now we know why.

Re: mystery of low compression solved.
This happened the later in the afternoon after I'd had her on the dyno. I know for sure it wasn't from a lean out. And I've never heard any detonation either. It was a really hot day, and I'm thinking the sustained load was just too much for the casties, that had done a turn before I even got them.
It's had a far whack of blowby for a a good long time, and it got a whole lot worse after that epsiode. This time I might try a few other tricks. I'm not too upset about it though. Although this motor has done <5000kms, i've given it death more often than not, and it's done 60+ 1/4 mile passes.
We can rebuild him, we have the technology

I gave the bloke who does my boring etc, a 60 series 5spd in exchange for a tank, overbore, hone, and block decking. He supplied my some used .040 cast pistons he had. I might have to go another .020 over and use some laser slugs I have, cos it'll be a while before I can afford new ones

I think they're from an E5 motor. They are 78mm, which means I'll need to overbore the block again, and they use a 20mm gudgeon pin, so the little end of the rod will need opening up. I'm poor, so I'm going to have to do whatever works out cheapest in the interim. that's probably going to mean using and A14 untill funds permit.

Yea,
That doesn't look so good.
I was running a little lean showing white plugs.
I had to install a second electric pump. I have one electric pump replacing the mechanical and a second electric pump mounted by the carbs. I never had to increase the diameter of the fuel line. Just up the pressure.
A little shot of fuel with the NOS as well. After doing all that, the plugs look good. No leaning out and no sucking the carb bowls dry.
