Re: fuel tank to suit intank pump
so whats the theory, cut and drill holes and mount it in there....

is it as simple as that?
how do you stop the tank blowing up when you cut it?

Blowing up when ya cutting it O.k Sure he would have taken the necessary steps to avoid that i see all hoses sender etc removed for a start. Also not all power/air tools create spark when cutting.
Oh Can i have that L series cross member in the background please ?

I reckon that leaving the tank in several 40 degree days with the hoses off, pretty much assures theres nothing to burn.

I wouldn't start cutting into a tank that had freshly had fuel in it without fully washing out with kero and then soapy water.

But I think too many people are overly cautious.

I'm happy to hear horror stories on this !!

Re: fuel tank to suit intank pump
ROConnor, the pump drops in from the top of the tank and picks up fuel from the bottom

now onto exploding tanks

i have actually tried to blow tanks up to see what could happen, i was rather dissapointed

the commodore tank that i cut the flange bit out of, where fuel pump hole and bolt holes are is part of a commodore tank thats been welded on. anyway, i thought that i'd test this theory of if you cut into a tank thats had fuel in it it will blow up

so i tipped the fuel out and left the tank for a day or maybe a couple of hours, then the next day or a couple of hours later threw a match into it....nothing happened, so i set a bit of paper on fire so i had a nice big flame then threw it in....once again nothing happened
so pulled out the grinder and cut out what i needed and then threw the rest of the tank away

ive cut and welded a couple of tanks since and not one has even caught on fire, maybe if i left the fuel in the tank it would explode....might have to try that one day from a safe distance

HA HA HA Ohh im crackin up here, Is that normal ?. Can remember bein about 12 and chuckin matches in a tin of fuel they just go out. You need some pretty decent flames to ignite a mass of fuel. Dont try this at home kids.

Re: fuel tank to suit intank pump
yeah with all the talk of having to flush all the fuel vapors out of the tank and fuel soaking into the metal and making it flamable, i thought i'd get some kinda flame to happen

maybe its got something to do with the tanks thats ive been cutting into have probably had stale fuel in them rather than fresh stuff
