Heres a pic i emailed to a friend, thought someone might be interested... The top is a ute i looked at with a very dodgey attempt at a CA conversion using the CA box. The bottom is my CA and stumpy boxes beside each other. Shows the difference in length. I am not 100% convinced i won't need to do some trans.tunnel mods yet.

What year and model car is that Stumpy box from exactly? Does anyone have a picture of the kind of car it's from? After I get my car registered here in Japan, I'm gonna start hunting down junkyards to see what I can find, and it would help a lot to have pictures of the cars to get parts from as I'm not too familiar with the newer Nissans from 1980+

I'm pretty sure that the stumpy is the same as all other L-series gearbox shifters. The Gearbox comes from the R30 2.4L Skyline (6 Cylinder L 24.). You need a S3 Bluebird CA20 Gearbox to get the bellhousing to fit a CA18.

It's my opinion that the CA18DET gearbox is much better. It shifts sooo much nicer. The Stumpy gearbox that I had, wouldn't shift at over 5000 revs. So I had to crunch it into gear when drag racing. I tried Automatic gearbox fluid in the stumpy, and the synchros couldn't keep up. MAybe mine was worn..but my CA gearbox is nice. The advantage of stumpy is that shifter comes up in the hole, which is a big deal for Ute owners. I like to have my seat back in my sedan, so having the shifter further back is no problem.

Why do you say you need a CA20 bellhousing? i swapped the CA18 bellhousing onto the stumpy and only needed to get a bearing changed. Is it to do with clearance in the transmission tunnel? I haven't seen a CA20 bellhousing so i can't compare the sizes/shapes.

Oh yeah..excuse me..Demojob agrees this is all you need if you already have a CA18 5 speed. So it depends if you already have a CA18DET box. The CA20 ones are cheap..nobody wants them.

I started with an Automatic gearbox on my import CA18DET engine.

So I needed the bellhousing from somewhere.

its a shame they dont fit the ca box but if u are going 2 do the conversion u might as well use the ca18 box as well as it is the box made for the motor i am running a ca box in mine and have no probs mate did the stumpy box and his box is stufed after amonth of driving.. just from the power of the motor those gearboxes must be alot weaker.. he wishs he hadnt used that box now...

The last stumpy box I had behind the CA18 had nearly 3 years of quite a bit of harsh driving was still a good box just didnt shift very quick with lots of revs and power.
When your mates stumpy box broke had the front cluster shaft bearing been changed for a bigger one?? this is why my first stumpybox decided to dump its guts into the bottom.
cheers Andrew

Yeah, the stumpy uses the same cluster as the 280z 5spd, and those are known for their durability.

I like the idea of fitting the factory tunnel hole but am not a big fan of the archaic gear mechanism.

 Re: Stumpy vs CA18 gb
Hey guys, well this is the perfect topic for me, because I was trying to decide wether to get a stumpy or CA gearbox in my 1200 cause I just blew mine up. I thought it had a CA gearbox in it, but from what people have said it sounds like a stumpy box. When reving past about 5 grand it doens't like to go into gear at all. So how hard is it and what needs to be changed to go from a stumpy box to a CA box. With experience from people on here, which one do you guys think would be better for my sedan. I need the stronger of the two, because which ever one I had, could only handle the power for about two weeks of driving. I have also been told that VL turbo boxes are pretty strong? Any suggestions??

Thanks

The stumpy doesnt suffer from flexing of the casing thanx to its ribbing. The stumpy seems stronger shorter and much like the supra design when I viewed them from the inside. Pity so many stumpy boxes disappear at pick a part by the crusher and not the buyer. One day this box will be sought after for its short and compact design.
