Datsun 1000 at Bathurst benny 2004/3/3 7:49 Tell a friend 8004 19 0.00 (0 votes)
I saw this pic while surfing the web. I think this shot is a great example of driving a 1000 to the limit. Might even be running cross-ply tyres (scary stuff) |

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst chris, your dad's co-driver was glynn scott,a queenslander who raced sports cars, like mclaren m8's & such.must have been quite a shock driving that citroen.he was the father of gary scott, who raced group c car's in the 77 & 79 races, was in a nissan factory bluebird in 83 & 84 & a skyline in 86,plus group a starions in 87 & 88.so,what did the insurance company say about the write-off?why didn't they just find a set of skid marks & call the police.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst Paul The incident was televised nationally, so what do you think the chances are of geting away with that sort of stunt? It's my guess that every insurance assessor in Australia saw it.
Yes, i remember now that the co-driver was Scott, although i couldn't remember his first name & your few sentences have increased my knowledge of him tenfold. I think you're right, he did not feel "right at home" in that Citroen, but he gave it his best shot. Apparently it was circulating fairly well up untill the tyre blew.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst this is the 68 race, because the car numbers for 68 were 51 & 53.the two cars were disqualified for illegal carbaration, meaning they probably drill out the main jets or some such.they finished 3rd & 4th in class before being excluded.this is in both 'australia's greatest motor race' & 'jamies hardie 1000 1984/85'.oh my,there's even a photo of bill daly in his citreon, having a moment at forrest's elbow.chris, that's in the 'australia's greatest motor racr book,by bill tuckey.there's also photos of 1000's in 1967,& a photo from 1969 where a works 1000 goes through the fence at the dipper,on two wheels no less.unfortuneately,he hit a camera tower,& broke the leg of a cameraman.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst Paul You're a legend, but then i've always said that about you.
I was sure that this photo was for the '68 race for the reasons outlined earlier.
I remember in 1968 watching Dad racing on TV & i saw him run off the road when the tyre failed. It didnt look too bad, but he ran over some rocks & it apparently tore the floor up pretty bad & the car was eventually declared a write-off. It was a cause of some concern as it was the personal transport of the wife of the Citroen distributor in Sydney & she was rather fond of it. The other driver was at the time the Queensland sports car champion, but i do not know his name. He died in a racing accident a few years later i believe.
You can blame my father for being one of the originators of the Formula Vee Racing Assc. too. He just couldnt stay out of it.
I was somewhat frowned upon as i had a distinct fondness for modified early American iron, while he, as one of the three founder members of the Veteran Car Club of Australia in 1952, was partial to very early [pre 1915] British, European & Continental cars in very standard trim. We went on rallys in a 1908 French made "FL" for many years back in the late 50's
He raced a number of times at Bathurst in the lesser classes & 1968 was his last year there.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst OK,...a few questions for the historicly knowledgable.
1. Since this is a '68 model, is it possible that it was the 1968 class "A" winning car? [I have assumed that he survived this little heart stopper]
2. Does anyone know why the winning car was disqualified?
3. Does anyone know any more about this particular car? Chris

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst This is the 67 winning car so to win it did survive this stint more than once round the track. http://svc002.bne011i.server-web.com/catalogue/autopics/cache/list-39public__0-1.htmlI can no longer find the other link with a write up of the datsun 1000 in the 68 race but frustatenly it never mentioned why! Ive contacted via mail a historical bathurst site in the hope of some answers, hope they reply. Theres also a sydney number I got down just in case someone can call up there in NSW 02-6332 1872.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst I have recently spoken with a fellow that i think was one of the drivers of the Corrola that was awarded first place in '68. [Hindhaugh] If i can find his number, i will ring him & ask.
The photo that i have of the '67 race shows a '67 car, but this one is a '68. The new '68 model was released from the factory from Oct '67 & i suspect that there was not enough time to aquire & prepare a new '68 car, so a couple of '67's were used.
Since this is a '68 car [Oct '67 to sept '68] i would say that the same thing applied. They raced a '68 car in 1968, even though the '69 model had been released just before the race day. Thats why i think that this is the 1968 race.
My 1970 coupe still had one of its original Dunlop B7 crossply tyres with it, so it is possible that this one has them, but i would have thought that radials would have been a dealer installed option.
My Father co-drove the most expensive car in the race in 1968. It was a Citroen & it crashed out when a tyre blew due to CAMS insistence on tubes being fitted to tubeless tyres. Heat killed it. He wasnt the only one to suffer blown tyres for this reason.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst In those days many of the cars were driven to Bathurst for the race, & the survivors were driven home afterwards.
The numberplate suggests that this one was one of these.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst The best part of this photo is that it reminds us of the days when the Bathurst race was for real cars, not race cars. Cars were divided into classes according to their retail PRICE. If you were an intending new car purchaser, you watched this race with intense interest as you wanted to see how well your next new car would perform.
The old addage of "Race 'em on Sunday, sell 'em on Monday" was never so true as when this race was running.
As far as the new car dealers were concerned, winners were grinners, & lots of new Holdens, Fords, big & small were sold within the next week, depending on who won.
Two 1967 Datsun 1000 two door sedans came home 1 & 2 in class "A" [the lowest price class] at the '67 Gallaher 500 at Bathurst. They sold a lot of Datsun 1000's after that. Notice that this car has a single door mounted mirror. It must have been a dealer installed "option" as these cars were supposed to be completely standard. The lack of bumper over-riders makes it a standard model. They were cheaper,...& lighter. It looks to be a '68 model, & i wonder if he kept it upright. I don't see a look of stark terror on his face, so perhaps he did.
Gallaher International was a cigarette company that was bought out by Phillip Morris, but in '67 the company execs all went to Bathurst in new Falxon XR GT's that were painted Gallaher silver with the wide red[ish] GT stripe over the car. Same as the cigarette pack. These were the only XR GT's to leave the factory in a non "GT Gold" paint job. Where are they today.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst it's coming through the Dipper,so,the lock should already be on for the right hander,& it looks like it is,so this'll bring the left hand side down.it looks like he could also put his arm out the window & push down on the road.doesn't look as if he slowed down much for this corner, does it.this was how the little cars made up time on the big cars,by not backing off.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst They won in 67 and 68 however disqualified in 68 cause of some technicality. they beat cars of 1300cc and under as well as other much more sophisticated and larger capacity cars. Just imagine a gx version with 90hp it would have ruled with its 625kgs. The drivers face says it all in his own world almost whistling away on a sunday.

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst It is a great photo. Don't forget the little B10s were giant-killers.
And on the lighter side: Datsun 1000 - now with less body roll!

Re: Datsun 1000 at Bathurst Thanks to TnPshow's link I now know that my father co-drove with Ray Heffernan in their Fiat 850 to 33rd place in the 1965 Armstrong 500 at Bathurst. This was a class 'A' car & they finished 7th in class. Armstrong was [is?] a manufacturer of shock absorbers.
He also drove a Fiat 124 in 1967 with George Murray as co-driver. This time they finished in 24th place & this was a more expensive Class 'C' car. This looks to have placed them 5th in class. 1967 was the second, & last year for Gallaher International sponsorship of this great race.
1968 was his last Bathurst event when he became a DNF in the Citroen DS21. As has been written in earlier posts, his co-driver was Glyn Scott.
In 1968 the race became the Hardie-Ferodo 500, but this was quickly nicknamed the 'Hardly Ferocious 500'
Thanks TnP, the link has filled in a little family history for me.
As an aside, the famous Australian race driver, David McKay, who competed in the original 500 at Philip Island & raced in seven of these events up to 1971 [with a 2nd in '61 & a 3rd in '71], lived most of his adult life only a short distance from here. I was extraordinarily fortunate to meet with him on a couple of occasions & talk about those exciting days at Bathurst. I was blessed.
