Believe it or not, it actually worked & was used to make calls.
The number was dialed on the press buttons & the conversation took place via the small speaker near the '6' button.

I vaguely remember a couple of years ago that someone had found another pic [possibly of this mobile phone] in a workshop or shed in SA somewhere. Can any of the other members remember?

Yes, It had been repainted in a similar, but slightly darker colour & it was in a collection or a museum, possibly/probably in South Australia.
EDIT Since determined to be a second vehicle & not the one I drove.

 Re: Mobile Phone
just noticed the speaker you talk of is up near the 3 on the later discovered phone.
Also different wheels and different looking rear spoiler... and 2 extra buttons (that look like they have been added later and arent operational at a guess)

I wonder if perhaps there was a small fleet of them built? wonder how many are left?

 Re: Mobile Phone
You're right, it is different, & a carefull look will show quite a number of differences.

I also recall now that somebody had said that there were two of them, so this must be the other.
I don't believe that there was a fleet of them but the one I drove came with its own trailer & a truck to haul it was seconded from somewhere whenever they moved it to another area. It's home base was either Sydney or Canberra whenever it wasn't being used.

When the first of the press button phones were released they had ten buttons only. It was at least a year before the twelve button version became available & it may have been even longer.
This one must be the 'new & improved' model.

Photographed in Goulburn in 1981, & yes, that's me at the wheel. I took it for a lap of the main street. The helmet has the same dual exhausts on the side as the car, ummm, errr, phone, has.

 Re: Mobile Phone
The specs?

Fibreglass body [like a Corvette]
Open cockpit. [like a WW1 fighter]
Monoposto driving position [like a Formula 1 car]
Monocoque chassis [also like Formula 1 cars]
Rear engine [Like F1 again]
Air cooled boxer engine [like a Porche]
Wire mags & fat rubber [like all good hot cars had]

It had handling characteristics that had to be experienced to be believed & the handset went up & down just because it could.
What a chick magnet.

The actual engine?
Well, ummm, errr, it's ummm a Porche-like advanced design particularly siuted to special purpose, specific performance,...... ahhh crap,... yes it's a VW on a shortened platform chassis with 3rd & 4th gear blocked out. It's flat out at about 25k with a restrictor under the carb to keep the pace down a bit.

I started work with the PMG [Post Master General's department] at 7:30am on the 24th of January in 1966. They became Telecom Australia & then Telstra. I'm still there.
During the time of the Sydney - Melbourne optic fibre project i was the District Fleet Manager, based in Goulburn NSW & i was responsible for the vehicle, plant & equipment fleet for the O.F. team, but i had nothing to do with the Nullabor project

ok. my grandfather did a fair bit of work on the nullabor project, so i thought i'd take a stab in the dark and see if it was such a small world
He worked with telecom for many years as well, would have retired about 10-15 years ago.
