Re: Engine bay of 180Y Looks like a very nice setup and visually I like it more than the twin cam version. Dman1000 has this engine a soch ca18t right? Wouldnt this engine have better port design than the z18t?

Re: Engine bay of 180Y was thinking of upgrading to a twin cam, but the SOHC ones seem to have far more bottom end grunt and great midrange power. Also the engines are small and light. Also easier and cheaper to get hold of.
16 valve engines have more high RPM power and are probably better for racing, but the car drives so well and if i went for more power, i'd be going through diffs like every half hour.

Re: Engine bay of 180Y Id never change to twin cam If I were you Id just put an intercooler after all here in Oz george fury a local racer ran a blubird with a non intercooled z18t that still holds the record for bathurst until they changed the track and made it faster by removing a dangerous corner were some poor sould lost it in 93/94 (feral or harry would know more) and that z18t produced mega figures that big money sr20 engines rarely hit. (somewhere of 400-500hp and more in pole sprint form). Turbo removes much of the multi valve advantage if setup properly. Also SOCH is simpler and more compact well done yes I rabbit!!! (as my jp friend says every time he means "I love it").

Re: Engine bay of 180Y The Gibson Motorsport Bluebird was well and truly intercooled!
There were 2 problems with Conrod straight and Murray's corner at Bathurst that prompted the introduction of 'the Chase', which is quite a fast chicane, but as far as chicanes go, its a pretty interesting one, with a good on-camber approach = high entry speeds, and a bit of a camber crest on the exit of the corner which can get the car a little light = good fun!
On Conrod, coming over the last crest at near 300kph, the awesome Group C cars were getting very 'light', and if there happened to be 2 cars side by side, the low pressure area between them could pull the 2 cars together as they came over that crest...
Also the braking area for Murray's was a bit dangerous with no run off to speak of, except the road out to the real world. There were big accidents at both of those places over the years.

Re: Engine bay of 180Y the reason for the addition of the chase to conrod straight was the death of mike burgmann in about 1986.he was on the right hand side of the track in traffic, when a crosswind blew him into the base of the spectator bridge, just after the last hump.strangely enough,if it wasn't for the chase, another racer by the name of don watson might still be alive,as he had a disc explode while breaking for the chase,& the car barrel rolled into a sand trap.that part of conrod was always treated with respect by the more experienced drivers, because the last hump had claimed 2 or 3 lives before burgmanns.

Re: Engine bay of 180Y So it was intercooled hay I was thinking of the exa maybe the oned raced by a lady the exa e15t one. Regardless of that its a neat setup and an intercooler wouldnt be hard to fit specially a small mazda rotor one.
Thanks for the history guys, as for the chase addition did it improve the pace because george furys record stood well into the 90s even past the skyline gtrs and the ford sierra beast.
