This is what my door looked like before painting.  The Aluminium knob poking out is what you press down to open the door.  It still needs a polish!!!

That's pretty slick. What about locking and unlocking?

Very nice. Thanks for that.
Did you know if it is ok with rego? I know a friend who did somethign like that with his rx3 and got rorted by rego... I think he only used the remote to open his though. Had a "kicker" thing that popped the door out on the remote control though. that was probably the problem.

yeah, l was pretty careful with the whole car to make sure that it still met the adr's and rego requirements.

The statement on the vicroads guide, is "you must have some form of mechanical device to open the door from the outside". Since door poppers aren't 'mechanical' (require electrical switches) you still need another device. I wanted poppers, but with the rego and the cost l decided against it.

My one is a direct linkage to the factory lock mechanism, and is mechanical. So it still meets the requirements, and l know a couple of guys that have there complete cars engineered with this.

I also found that if you give your lock mechanism a good soak in wd40, it makes opening the door a whole lot easier!!!!

The central locking kit l got was only cheap (around $40, but bought with alarm), but l know the owner of an intall centre.

If you're looking to get some, i'd definately recommend the "vision" brand. You never know, if l ask real nice l might be able to get a kit?

Of course if you don't want an alarm, the kits with remote cost heaps more.

Anyway, the knob is pushed down. With the way the mechanism works, when the door is closed it pops up higher, then when you press it down it stays down. Pretty easy once you have a look at it.

Oh yeah - patching the holes takes some work. Need to make metal to custom fit, then weld & grind to perfect. Once you've done this it needs to be cleaned & painted on the inside to stop rusting also.

If you can weld sheetmetal you should be right.
