Finally got my engine pulled this weekend.  Here's a shot of my block numbers.  Interesting font on the "A14" stamp.  So at this point I following the book: step 1 - clean the outside of the block.  Looks like under the grime is the original paint!

Now if you can come up with an A15 crank & a set of good used A15 pistons if your original bore is servicable, or new A15 pistons if you are going to bore it, & you will have a sneaky little step up in stroke, & its attendant increase in torque.
An extra six cibic inches for nothing [in terms of engine mods] has gotta be a good thing.
Oh yeah, you need the A15 oil pan to clear the rod bolts on one side. Other than that, everything else can be from this original A14 engine.

What are you saying here Chris??? With an A15 crank and pistons you could build a stroker?? If so tell me more.......

Which pistons - A14 or A15? If you can put the guts of an A15 in an A14 then what's the difference between the 2 block? ALso there's gotta be a downside - reving maybe? Thanks for the info - sounds interesting.

When those clever little Datsun engineers upgraded the A14 to an A15, they did it "economicly" [on the cheap] They increased the stroke, but kept the block & the A14 rods. This put the wrist pin closer to the top of the block when at TDC, so to stop the piston from poping out the top of the bore, they simply made a piston that was shorter between the wrist pin & the crown.

So far, all we have here is an A14 with a longer stroke crank & a lower crown piston.
The extra swing of the crank meant that the rod bolts on one side now touched the oil pan, so they simply made a new pan with four bulges on one side to clear.

The rest of the engine is dimentionally interchangeable with the parent A14.

They were clever little buggers those Datsun engineers. As for downside, yes, i guess that the redline could be as much as 500 rpm lower, which still safely puts it up around 6,000 rpm or more.
Now i don't know about anyone else, but i don't normally do a lot of driving at 6,000 rpm on the street, & with more torque, you wouldn't need to, & in a heavy car like a B310 it would be a bonus. [OK, a B310 is HEAVY when compared to a B10]

It's just a thought to keep in the back of your mind when scrounging through junkyards. The sneaky aspect of having a 1500cc version of an A14 appeals to my sense of underhandedness.

You'll love it when they say, "gee, it goes bloody well for an A14" That's when you hide a wry smile.

and the only advantage of putting all the a15 internals into an a14 is saving you on re- rego costs, and the sneaky aspect?? or is there something else??

No, that just about covers it.
I don't know about puting "ALL" the internals into the A14 block though. Just the A15 crank, pistons & oil pan should cover it. Everything else can be A14. Now all one needs to do is find a frost cracked A15 shortblock for nix to make it all come together.

What about the oil pick up?? Running the A15 sump would you have to change the oil pick as well??

Provided that the A15 sump is the same configuration as the A14 one, i don't believe that there is any need to change the pickup, but if there is any concern, then use the pickup that goes with the sump that is being used.
I'l have to check on that.
