OK, see the blocks of steel in the centre part of the diff? They are hard steel plates, which are held against the side gear faces with strong springs. The hole through the middle where the shaft goes which the idler gears are running on, is more like a slot than a hole. When the diff is put under load, the side gears rotational motion, tries to twist the plates. This forces the slot in the plates to try and climb away from the pin, thus jamming the plates against the side gear faces, preveting the axles from turning independently, and giving two wheel drive.
Thats the idea anyway.

 Re: H165 + SLL
I had my diff out of the rally car the other day and took this pic so other members could see what a Spring Loaded Locker looks like when fitted to a H165 centre.
No signs of appreciable wear after many events - so its all good.

Posted this one for you A14 force

Yep I designed and made this one to fit my diff centre. Do a web search under "phantom grip" lots of info there and maybe links to manufacturers.

No, each centre will require a similar design but will be dimensionally different.

Bart - notice the location of the Aluminium Bronze thrust washers we were talking about. There is no wear at all on the sides of the locking plates so they are doing a fine job stopping excessive end float and damage to the spider gears.
You slack azz, get a camera and email me pics of what you came up with

 Re: H165 + SSL
sorry I thought he might have modified an existing one to fit. If you could share the design it would be a huge help as Ive got a 4age going infront of my H165 and it would be nice to get both wheels smoking!
