This pic shows the little chips on no. 4 swirl (far left) & large chunk taken out of no. 2 swirl.  Now looking at it, it seems that something has tried to weld itself to the piston and head somehow...

How can this happen so quickly? For info see thread

Ooooooh, that can't be good.
Ddgonzal is right, the white valves look like they have been a bit hot, possibly [probably] due to lean mixture in those cylinders.

You had an air leak in your manifold at the back [No. 3 & 4] didn't you? This would cause a lean mixture in those cylinders.

umm ok....!

So DD/Dman, is there any evidence shown that this happend quickly or strait away? Not sure about this noise, it didnt sound itself all morning but i couldnt hear much of the engine as there was no exhaust system on so yea. Before that, cant recall any different sound - i knew my tappets were out when my rebuild was completed but they were all adjusted correctly.
I know this sounds bad, but who should i be blaming? Myself for poor understanding of the events that unfolded, the tuner who said the engine was in good working order, not smooth but ran fine or someone else?
For it to run lean the mixtures would need to adjusted, i never touched them after the tuner id his bit and also the engines running a full 22 degrees retard as that is the best he could do in order for my engine to idle, run & not run on.

What gives? I have to admit I did rush into finishing the engine so i did not go over everything twice. Do you reckon the head is salvageable? If i can get the holes welded up and worked out could it still work?!
Or should i be looking for another A15 head...

Cheers
Dave

hahahhah phunk you noticed that too, Mobil's stickers say my car can suffer from pinking (what is that gayness or something)?

But yeah datrat_dave it looks like some detonation has been happening, I;d honestly goto your tuner with teh head and say look at this, this happened x amount of days after your tune driving in normal conditions etc. But judging from the scarring on the chambers it looks like there were some foreign particles in there as well. I had a mate who had screws or something from his webbers fall out and get sucked into the engine, not a pretty site either.

Food for thought but I hope you get some goodness out of this experience,

Cheers
Damo

Pinking is the British term for what is also known as pinging, or detonation & it is a term that has been around a lot longer than the term 'Gay' in it's current meaning.
Just pick the term you like, or were taught as an apprentice, & go with that as all are correct, although i believe that there is a school of thought that says that pinking is the 'proper' term.

Pinking - English term for detonation. Gets its name from the hot spots that have developed in the combustion chamber/top of piston that cause/result in detonation. Pinging is the slang term given to it due to the sound of detonation.

That's food for thought.

Sounds good. In USA, 'pinking' is virtually never used. I've never heard anyone say it, but have seen it in writing occasionally.

Looks like the engine was pinging: too far advanced, too lean, too much compression or all of the above. Pinging is also called 'detonation', very bad for your engine. Detonation can ruin an engine in seconds.

Did you hear any light "pinging" sound? It sounds like marbles rattling in a can, but very faintly.

The white exhaust valves are also a bad sign ... indicating extreme leanness. The one tan valve looks more normal.
