Secrets of a B310 dattodevil 2006/2/3 7:34 Tell a friend 6725 15 0.00 (0 votes)
Well as most people know, B310 bottom arms required to be used when performing a stanza/910 strut conversion on a 1200 as they are longer, But are they? Well what I have here is evidence of how the sunny arm gains it's length. To the left is a standard B110 ball joint (Part# SBJ176) and to the right the B310 sunny counterpart (Part# SBJ163). as you can see, the sunny ball joint is approx 12-15mm longer than the 1200 ball joint.
These can also be used on non converted 1200's to give you that extra camber that you always wanted |

Re: Secrets of a B310 I've just wacked a Sunny F/E in my car and the earlier (mine is a '72) ball joint bolt pattern is smaller. Even the bolt holes are smaller. To get around that I just used the Sunny arms as well.
But it's good to know I can move the wheels inboard if I need to.

Re: Secrets of a B310 I don't think you could use them unless you were also changing your struts. The 310 ball joint uses a larger diameter taper. It wouldn't fit into the 110/210 steering arm. 310 steering arms, (As you know) have a greater bolt spacing than the 110/210's do. So you couldn't use them, without swapping the whole strut. As for the lower arms, they are indeed the same length. With the exception, of the diameter of the bolts which hold the ball joint to them, (Excluding the utes which use the bigger bolts like the 310's) they are the same. However the 310 arms are made of a slightly heavier construction, so it would be a toss up between strength verses weight, when chosing which arms to use. (I know the difference is negligable, but some folk will trim off weight anywhere they can)
I can't speak with any authority as to the ball joint taper on the 110 utes, as I have never compared them in person. _________________

Re: Secrets of a B310 so basically you can't fit B310 ball joints to a B110 lower control arm because the B110 steering arms won't fit the B310 balljoint? But could you change the B110 steering arms to B310 steering arms to get around this?

Re: Secrets of a B310 i'd be a bit worried about increasing the track, but i guess the stanza spindles/hubs actually decrease the track, so it probably comes out all right

Re: Secrets of a B310 Quote: Well as most people know, B310 bottom arms required to be used when performing a stanza/910 strut conversion on a 1200 as they are longer the reason you have to change control arms is because of the different bolt spacing on the bottom of the Stanza strut, not because of the length, as A14 pointed out. and B310 arms are not required, you can also use Stanza arms. buy them at the same time as the struts. I think the increase in track from fitting Stanza struts is around 50-60mm

Re: Secrets of a B310 Ah I had to dig this out of the closest today. I was planning on buying a set of balljoints to go along with some other bits I should have replaced a while ago (mainly the passenger side tie rods).
Anyhow I was looking up the powermax book at work and the B310 Sunny list both the BJ163 and BJ176. Silly autobarn dude tried to convince me the 176 was the right part for me but I was holding the ball joint from my old sunny up to it and had to point out the differnces in length and angles.
*sighs, now I'll just have to wait for someone to order me in a set of 163's from work.

Re: Secrets of a B310 Quote: witch one is the best to use, using 14" wheels on 120y struts under 1200 ute * With 120Y front suspension, use the 120Y ball joint (not the ones shown here). * With B310 suspension (in any car) use the B310 ball joint * With B110 suspension use the B110 ball joint You may have some unusual combination like B310 strut with 120Y knuckle arm installed in Datsun 1200 pickup. In that case I'm not sure if anyone knows which one you should use. When you figure it out, let us know!

Re: Secrets of a B310 These aren't meant to take one out and fit the other. So whatever you already have in there working OK is undoubtedly the right one.

Re: Secrets of a B310 The reference to B110 in the photo description is wrong.
Below applies to nothing B110 or early B210.
The late 120y and late ute use the BJ176 and can be interchanged with BJ163 (the sunny and stanza part) but ONLY to be used with the later lower control arms (late 120y, late ute, stanza, sunny), to which ONLY larger size steering arm will fit.
