Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition My guess is that it replaces the points. There are only two cut-outs because 1-3-4-2 are 180 CRANK degrees apart. The distributor is probably retained to send the spark to the appropriate cylinder. This set up would eliminate the slop from the timing chain and distributor gear.

Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition This is the same setup my A13 used. I am modifying a CA16 crank angle sensor to drive of the end of the cam where the mechanical tach drive was.

Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition Factory A-series EFI used a standard electronic distributor. No crank trigger. This is on the A14E and A15E which Nissan called "EGI".

Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition Basically as the cut outs pass the sensor the box is triggered like a coil to provide spark.
My question is, how does this system differentiate between TDC exhaust/inlet and TDC comp/firing is there something on the cam? Also I take it this system is waste spark, I can only see two cut outs.

Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition This is a vintage system, like all good old race engines running distributors the timing is fixed, ie in the the dizzy the weights are fixed and there is no advance curve at all. Same for this system. It looks like from the CDI pack it is a Nismo Ultra set up which is fairly rare...

Re: A-series crank-trigger ignition OK, so this replaces the distributor points (points-type distributor or the pickup in an electronic distributor).
Is the distributor still used to route the spark to the right plug? Or do they use four coils?
