Re: Twin cams on an a-series.
Hi fellas, been a bit busy lately at work, tomorrow is my first day of work in five weeks.

We managed to finish the event both days first in class, luckily for us the others in class did not finish so we got good points for both days.

New front suspension is amazing, 6" of bump and 2" of droop all totally adjustable. It actually caused me a bit of a problem as a driver not knowing what it was going to be like to drive, turned in and braked beautifully, the only problem I had which nearly put us out of the event was I approached a creek crossing a bit (a lot actually) to hard and the front suspension bottomed out in the creek on a rock and bent the sump guard up and belted the sump and bent it severely as well as the cross member, this caused a oil leak and a new rattle in the motor.(Later found out I was not the only one to have this problem thanks to the same creek crossing).

Through good service know how and good luck we managed to keep it all together for the two days.

I had three major problems on the week end, 1st the sump 2nd was the miss in the engine which has been there since the middle of last year, have not been able to realiably rev the motor over 6000 rpm, its been a big pain in the arse because its just starting to get going at those revs, tried everything external of the motor to fix it, no luck, didn't know what it was, anyway in this rally it just got worse, wouldn't rev over 5000 revs, very frustrating!!

We could only drive the car up to these revs and change up to the next gear to keep momentum and road speed, like I say we finished.

Third problem was we lost oil pressure half way through the first day, one minute we had some next we didn't. Any way I decided to soldier on, it got to the stage when the car was idling we had no oil pressue at all. Resigned to the fact that I was going to be rebuilding the motor at the end of the event (if we finished) we kept on going with a massive miss in the motor over 5000 revs and bugger all oil pressure.

The A-series being a tough little motor that they are we finished, ( I often wonder if was a different type of motor whether we would have.)I pulled the motor down hoping to find the cause of the miss and we found it...the cam lobe was severely worn on the intake lobe for No. 2 pot. This expains why it gradually got worse over time.

The new rattle in the motor was the crank hitting the bent up sump.

Anyway that my adventure for the last rally, motor has been pulled down and I will be putting a new set of rings and bearings, honeing it and a new more aggressive cam in it.

Reason for loss of oil pressure was the pick up was knocked and came loose.

I had the same problem with a cam I brought from QLD they didn't relieve between the lobes properly. the lifter chewed out and killed the lobe. I have now changed to a Wade Cam with no problems
