I was surprised to see that the manifold was both fabricated, & round port. The manifold looks to be well made & well matched to the ports, but I wonder if the round port head was originally used to comply with regs, or because an oval port type was not available.

@ Killer - nah, I don't think that cam will fit this motor? I might save that for the A15 I've got.

@ Chris1200t - not sure what's in the Solex's - I might pull 'em apart and see.

The previous owner said it was dyno'ed at about 57kw at the wheels and the carbs havent been tuned properly yet. Should make the coupe grunt a bit none the less.

@Adam - yeah, I have spoken to Craig and he's going to do some additions to the cage and then it's straight into Doyles for some beating.
Just a matter of when Craig can do it...

@ benny - It's a cover to get to the adjustable timing gear. I can post a pic but it's just a blanking plate with 2 cap head screws in it.

@Dodgeman - This motor is a bit of a mystery - I guess I can't tell much about it until I pull some bits off, but I won't until I have to

Nice spotting on the pulley too. I got a spare one with it also.

I wasn't able to drive the motor when I looked at it, but I was able to run it. All of my 1000's to date have had stock A10's in them. With most of the trim removed and this heart transplant coupled to a 5 speed, It should move along nicely

The 4 speed box will be replaced with a Celica T50. I have designed a nice adaptor plate and a mate made a prototype on the CNC mill at work.

Stay tuned for photos and the AutoCAD files once we have the bugs ironed out

Oh yeah and before anybody asks - the white perspex between the carbs and manifold was being used as a baffle for coldair induction...

This motor came out of an Austin Healey sprite.

Certainly is, which is handy, because it'll go straight into the 1000 without having to modify the engine mounts.

Compression is 11.5:1 - it's had a lot of meat shaved off the head!

I bought this motor second hand and the fella wasn't too sure of the cam specs. He says it LOVEs to rev to 8000 though...

DB, cheers! Things are starting to happen. Paint and panel as soon as I get the cage modified.

I'm excited!!!

 Re: New race motor
Not sure about pump gas - I think the previous owner ran it on premium.

I'll check the primary diameters when I get a chance - I'm pretty sure they're 1 1/4"

EDIT - spoke to the previous owner and he ran it on 98 octane + octane booster to overcome pinging.

And the primaries are 1.5" and very well made mandrel bends... happy!!!

looks good mate!

Is that a a12a with the dizzy at the front?

Point of order.

The engine that TnPshow has is a 1200 engine. These were stamped A12, although I call them 1200's as this is the only rear drive passenger model that they were used in, & I use the A12 designation to refer to the 1974 & later versions for the sake of clarity.
The engine in the photo is [correctly] refered to as an A12 as per the engine ID on the block

The A12A engine, with its 75mm bore, 70mm stroke & 1237cc was used in the B310 range, which means that it appeared sometime in 1978 & later. The A12A has the distributor in the rear position near No.3 cylinder & is to all intents & purposes an A12 engine with a 2mm overbore.

The only A series engine to use the front distributor location were the A10, in the Datsun 1000 range & the 1200 from 1970 up to '73. The new, re-designed engine was introduced with the B210 model for '74 & this new design was used on all other A series engines.

With a bore size of 76mm & it's original stroke of 70mm it would displace 1270cc. Using standard A14 pistons will make this happen & this is the spec & capacity of my short stroke A13 engine that was also used in some B310 models.

At the A14's first oversize of 76.5mm you would get 1287cc & this is what I used in my 1000 sedan for many years. It's a great combination.

The nearest I could get to 1280cc was with a 76.25mm bore for 1279cc, but this is an odd size to use when one remembers that A14 pistons are so readily available.

1200 engines of this spec are an absolute joy & I know that you will find a way to soil your underwear more than once when you get it out onto the track. It's a great choice & a bloody good score.
Good on you.

P.S. I rather like the tiny front pulley. This should slow up the water pump & alternator quite nicely at racing speed.
