Ive always ran away from electrics but just in case
I was able to use internally regulated ones found on
so many other later cars from all makes jp and korean
with a few instructions found online.

I cut the factory cast iron bracket with a hand file
saw to make sure the new one lined up and used the V
pulleys available on similar models from older cars.
On another I cut the bracket and used a washer.

Older cars getting hard to find but never had an issue
as I collected plenty of them from pick a part at $10
special week offers.

Cleaned up my engine bay as well as gave me extra amps
from I think was 25A on my 1k and 30a in another but
went to 35A and then 45A units.

$10 a pop was always good fun

I just did a search on ebay, using the specific hitachi part number rather than generic datsun 1200 1973 alternator.

A few came up, but after the LT135 they had a "-" and either "13B" "69B" or some other numbers. Do these reference anything as far as the mounting lugs or dimensions (they all appear identical in the pics) or does that just denote what application it was originally placed on or something else?

it's the lt135 that I have and am after.

Today a family friend did more running around. Apparently there are rebuild kits available and it has been ordered in. Not sure exactly whats in it, but bearings were ordered too (haven't seen him in person to know whether or not that's part of the kit or an option or what)

The place he went to had an old guy working there who used to rebuild them years ago and was familiar with the specific alternator. He said beyond brush wear, he encountered the rectifier failing in many of them with enough time/mileage. They are also apparently available, so we've tried to order that as well. Fingers crossed.

In the mean time I'm still after another, if for no other reason than to have the car on the road whilst I fix the existing one, which is difficult due to work hours. So anyone in melbourne/VIC let me know.

Thanks for the info too ddgonzal!

Datsun 1200 used different Hitachi alternators over the years. Starting with the LT-135 small diameter unit. circa 1974 started using the larger diameter LT-150. In 1981 started using the built-in regulator LR-135

Identification: LT135 has a black plastic grille on the back

The larger ones (LT150) have no black things on the back. Just the metal case

Hey guys, after a frustrating day trying 3 different alternators that were meant to be direct replacements, I'm looking for anyone with a working (as long as the bearings are ok and it was charging the last time you used it, I can replace brushes) hitachi alternator.
Willing to travel to melbourne outer suburbs and beyond if need be. PM or reply here.

Failing that anyone have a part number for a new replacement that actually fits and is sourceable here in melbourne? The ones I tried either placed the pulley 5-10mm forward of the correct position, or were larger diameter and fouled the radiator hose/outlet pipe coming out of the block.

http://www.twinturbo.net/nissan/300zx ... -kit-for-the-VG30Des.html

there were 3.6 and 4.0 stroker conversions and Maxima forums compare the VE and VQ chambers showing
little difference in design almost like the VQ in its infancy but cast iron block.

$1600!! That's fairly cheap..what does that include? (n/m) posted by michaelkih (Dallas) on May 26, 2004 at 09:00 PM Message We can furnish a stroker kit for any engine!! Increasing the displacement of an engine is a sure and reliable way of obtaining a power boost. This boost is obtained by lengthening the stroke of the crankshaft, enlarging the the bore size of the pistons, and raising the compression ratio. Power increases of 30-40% are achieved this way, and most of it is in the form of torque, which means greater acceleration. A Stroker Kit consists of: 1. Stroked PAECOLLOY crankshaft with all journals built to standard size 2. Forged aluminum pistons in your choice of bore size and compression ratio 3. Deves racing piston rings Your stock connecting rods can be used with the stroker kit, or we can furnish you with chrome-moly or titanium con rods as an extra cost item. Allowance for the extra stroke is achieved by moving the wristpin hole higher up in the new set of pistons. Stroker kits for most 4-cylinder engines will cost $1,299 and for 6-cylinder engines will cost $1,699. These prices assume that you will be sending in an exchange crank. Without an exchange crank, there will be an additional core charge. It takes an absolute minimum of six weeks to make the pistons and process the crankshaft for a stroker kit. Please allow for this when you plan your engine rebuild. To order your stroker kit call (800) 326-6401. We will help you select the correct bore, stroke, and compression ratio for your particular engine.

Yes, the original Datsun clutch would last about 120k, depending on how it was driven

L18s are very smooth, and were blueprint balanced at the factory. Any vibration is not normal, in fact the factory redline was 7000 RPM
