I use 38 + 33mm valves in mine
Don't recall the head casting
Worked OK for me

Ports are 36 x 28 inlet and 33 x 30 exhaust

The block may be similar in height
But the overhead cam and rocker cover might put you abit high
I know when fitting them to a 1000 you have to lay them over a little if you expect them to clear a standard bonnet

Somewhere in the shed I have an adaptor plate and flywheel to bolt an A series to a Kombi box
I think the guy I got it off had a rear engined beachbuggy

No plans to use it yet though
