i think you should get good results, before i went all out on my l20bturbo i was thinking of using a to4 with 650holley or similar with a simple log type manifold setup. Standard internals should take a bit with the right tuning. Make sure you design the manifolds so you get access to the bottom flange bolts, i found it easier to convert to studs. Maybe think about locking dissy or similar. Good luck on your project you will love a boosted lseries

I had a draw thru setup on an L20 in a 1600 - had a custom plenum (some said it was Datrally, but who knows?).

FJ20 Turbo sucking thru a 45mm weber.

Was lag city but when it came on boost it hauled some serious ass!

I can't really offer any hints but maybe answer questions you might have...

I'll go dig up some photos and post em up for you.

All I can say is do it!

did you guys make your own exhaust manifold? I'm thinking of running my down pipe from my headers up and over the top of the tranny"behind the head"to the left side of the motor to locate my turbo there..do you guys think there will be alot of turbo lag because of the distance..??

yea i made mine from 12mm flanges and 90degree elbows and steam pipe just welded with a mig. I think with drawthrough you would want to have the carby/turbo and manifolding on the same side to keep the inlet tract as short as possible to avoid fuel problems such as puddling and distribution. You may be able to use standard inlet manifold and just make a bracket up to suit with the turbo outlet dumping into it. I think with the turbo so far away lag would definatelly be more not to mention stress on manifolding with the extra distance and weight of turbo. why do you want to mount the turbo on this side? Heres a pic of my dodgy log manifold, works fine however! Bottom one isnt mine found it a while ago.

i figured to relocate on the left side for more space...and looks^.the inlet for intake will be slanted down like a slope to a stock intake.."over the valve cover"maybe that will help with puddling and distribution..?what do you think??i'm trying to stay away from making an exaust manifold...unless i could find one already made.....but if worse comes to worse i'll have to make one.

Any picture of the L20B engined Datto???
I have an L20B engined Datto too, I like the idea of a Turbo in it.

808dattodude, i take it you wish to use standard exhaust manifold, then run an exhaust pipe from there to other side. Its a different approach but it should work so long as you make thick piping and brace it somehow to the block. Maybe look into upgrading thread size on bottom exhaust flange so you can do it up real tight with zero exhaust leaks. It would sure save a lot of work thats for sure, and slopping down over rocker cover sounds ok, just watch bonnet clearance, i got 5mm clearance between my rocker cover and bonnet
Just spent today driving the beast, goes much harder with new plugs, plant it in 2nd and it just bags up onto boost(open wheeler now though!) You will love it!

Here's some pics of the setup in my old 1600:
(note the injectors mounted on top of the plenum and the adjustable boost bleed-off at the end)...
