That sounds odd. All my utes, albeit stock ones, are really easy to steer. Especially when its rolling. Maybe get your steering checked out at a steering place.

Power steering will not be be the answer.
I`d replace the idler arm bushes with urethane, use plenty of the grease that comes in the kit. The biggest problem will probably be the caster setting. too much caster will make the car very heavy to steer. And as already said, check your tire pressures. up to 40psi is ok. Make sure all the tierod ends and the drag link are good aswell.

I dont think that the 1200 anywhere in the world ever came with a power steering unit. Its possible that the Japenese may have done so (they have a go at everything), but certainly nothing here in australia.
With much nashing of teeth and removal of hair, you could make comething fit from somthing else. That would entail custom everything to fit an alien steering box, power steer pump, idler pulley, extra groove on the crank pully (a/c pulley would work), mount brakcets. hmm pretty extensieve job really, when the comments made by sikyne would be the first port of call. Dont think anyone on this forumn has done it, cause the utes are not too heavy in the big picture. My first car was a SWB patrol with no power steer, and 12.5" wide tyres and Im a skinney bugger.

Who cares? Datsun 1200 doesn't need power steering. The factory never had it as an option, not even for the utes.
