Guys,
For those guys with weber carb set ups (side draught) what did you do for the breathing ports on the top of the tappet cover and the side of the block????

What is the best way to deal with this so that you dont suffocate the engine??

I know for the down draught webers you can plumb the ports back into the inlet manifold but with the set up in mine that cant be done to my side draught manifold.

help would be greatly appreciated

The breather on the top of the rocker cover is for fresh air, so often those with Weber carbs simply plumb this to a small air filter ... that's what I did for my downdraft Weber.

The tap on the side of the engine is for PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation). If the sidedraft manifold doesn't have the tap for the standard threaded Datsun PCV valve, you could simply add a section of hose between the PCV valve and a regular (large) tap on the intake.

more info

PCV is good for oil control, a benefit to your street engine even if the main purpose is emissions control. At high vacuum, it keeps the crankcase under partial vacuum, so excessive oil isn't sucked past the rings. At low vacuum (full throttle) the pressure is likewise partially equalized.

In all cases a small metered amount of air is sucked through the breather into the intake manifold to whisk the blowby gases into the combustion chamber, keeping them out of the atmosphere and out of your lungs.

Thanks mate,

In that case then would it be ok if I made an oil catch can, mounted it to the firewall, ran a hose from the rocker cover to the top of this catch can and from the bottom of the catch can back to the PCV, that would do a good job as well wouldn't it ???

This is one of the things suggested to me by a friend who is into rallying.

I don't think that would work. The rocker cover needs air, the PCV needs intake.

If the engine is ventilated correctly and the rings are in good condition, you don't need an "oil catch can" or oil-separator. I'm speaking of a street-going engine.

What happens if you use a little air filter down on the cank case vent, but the filter has a few bent pipes on it to stop the oil coming ou. As thats what I've been told to do by many people
Cheers

yes, just use a hose to a filter mounted off the engine. The bend in the hose will prevent oil from being thrown onto the filter.

It may have been a coincidence, but the one time I ran an A-14 with the the breathers set up that way, it started to smoke quite a bit. What I did on my last A-series with a side draft, was to plumb the PCV to the port for the vacuum assist brakes.

That's what I've been trying to say ... the PCV should be connected to intake manifold vacuum.

Does the fabric softener bottle have to be "Cuddly" ..hhehehehe

You seem to have a fetish for laundry goods. Do you prefer to use pantyhose to tie up the scourer?
