"too big to upload" is the file size, not the size of the picture.

For example, the picture size of this one is:

200x150 pixels (3% of one megapixel)

This one is:
100 x 75 pixels (0.0075 megapixels)

You need to start with a bigger picture, and do two things:

1. reduce pixel size (width x height)
480x320 is good for this site and is the size I normally use. I don't go bigger than 640x480 because it's too big for an 800x600 monitor when put into the web page. I normally don't go smaller than 320x240.

2. reduce file size
Use JPG format (like you did). But you can adjust the "quality" when saving it. Your graphics program may have a "quality" setting when saving it (or 'advanced' settings). I normally use 76% quality (medium) which looks great.

What photo software are you using to resize the pictures? We can give more specific tips.

Yeah 640X480 is usually the go and I submit all the pics I've taken in that size.

thanks for that help, i was actually a 1st year graphic design student so i should know all this stuff.

I have photoshop but on my mac i have a program called iPhoto which i use to upload and store my photos on my laptop. to put them on the site i just export the photos to the desktop and then upload using datsun1200.com. I have a 4 megapixel camera and take my photos at A4 size. when ever i email pics i i do the same, and can get much larger pics.

Cheers henry

UTE18L, when you "export" a picture, does it give you a quality or advanced choice?

By lowering the quality, you'll lower the file size (but not the picture size). This is what needs to be done to make it fit on the site.

I'm not familiar with iPhoto, but maybe it has a Preferences or Options menu?

I should have said "JPEG Quality" or "Compression ratio" or "JPG compression". Screen or print quality isn't what's needed.
