If there are any car stereo gurus out there....
I currently have a custom computer setup in my 2001 patrol. I built it as a bit of a challange with a friend and well I won that one....
It has the capability (it its current degraded form) to run turn by turn navigation, off road mapping (GPS assisted), play various media, wireless internet access, and play butloads of digital recorded music (WMA, MP3, FLAC, etc)
some photos of the current setup from the software homepage
Ride Runner Home pageSince my mobile phone now has turn by turn navigation that is better than my carputer ever had that feature is redundant.
The offroad software I dont use much so i could load that onto my laptop for when do need it.
The DVDs and movies thing, not that fussed about. If Im driving im not watching movies, and if im not driving im outof the car doing something, not watching movies...
So the only feature that I really want to keep is the ability to store and play a buttload of MP3 music.
I am happy to ditch the carputer in favour of a new single/double DIN unit or I can rebuild the carputer.
A new carputer with the features, will push it out to around $700. (new board,CPU,Ram, HDD, case etc...), plus a few hours stuffing about with software and customising various bits and pieces.
Some have suggested that I just plug in an ipoo in, but that I have to switch that on everytime, and Im limited 160GB
Head unit Requirements
AM/FM radio
CD player with MP3 capability
Ability to store around 250gb of music with a reasonable user interface.
I also want to be able to control everything from the head unit.
3 x RCA output (Front, rear, sub output)
Mobile phone input
Anyone got any creative ideas or know of head units that meet the requirements.
Cheers
