Datsun was a brand name for Nissan, like Chevrolet is for General motors. Begining in 1979, Nissan began to change the corporate name from Datsun to Nissan to give better corporate identity. While I don't know about other parts of the world, here in the states, starting in 1979 vehicles were badged Datsun by Nissan. The plan was that by 1984 most would then be used to the Nissan name and starting as of 1985 vehicles were badged only as Nissan. Nissan is one of the oldest new car manufacturers in Japan. The link will give those interested a history of the early beginings of the company. And to answer your question in a more direct way, Datsun IS Nissan
