You can't "burn out" the 1200 tacho. It's an inductive loop....

You've just short circuited the wire you installed. Great for melting wires...

Please if you don't understand electronics. Please do some reading before continuing with this craziness.

As Steve (Phunk) said. It is wired in series.

I beg to differ. A 1200 tacho requires 3 wires to operate. Earth, Ignition 12V and Inductive loop.
Now the 12v ign supply terminal is clearly marked on the tacho with a ( + ) symbol, easy
Earth terminal clearly has a metal tab that goes to the housing. ( If one understands electrical principals it is clearly easily recognisable)
Inductive loop terminal has a piece of plastic with a hole through its centre. it has a metal strap over this plastic which has a stud and nut on it just like the other 2 terminals.
One might be led to assume that if an unknowing installer was to connect ignition positive to this terminal, one could actually burn the tacho. Who is to know how one has connected their tacho if they already show signs of missundestanding its instalation?

I do belive there is no way john could of melted wires with his description of instalation. For example, if wire runs from A to B and finishes at C ( A = power supply eg, Ign 12v. B = load eg, coil positive. C = earth eg, coil negative.) We would have a complete circuit.
If one runs another wire in parallel from A to B whether it is looped through an inductive tacho or not, it would make no difference.
But if someone was to run a wire in parallel from A straight to C whether through an inductive tacho or not, one would soon notice melting wires upon trying to turn over the engine. This would result in a burnt ignition module ( for elec ign ) or melted points and wire ( for points ign)

Though I better clear up the misconceptions.

ok so i will have another go at it ,, if i find the power wire to the + side of the coil then ur telling me all i need to do is cut it and put the tacho in between both ends

ok now this is what i did ,found the power wire to the coil in my case ,black with a red trace .
back of the standard tacho loop wire male spade to the black with red trace then the female plug of the tacho to the pos side of the coil and yeehaw it be working sweet .
many thanks guys i couldnt have done it without your help .

the wires are normally there on the older cars but if u cant find them yeah just do like i did its a lot easer to trace wires in the engine bay then under the dash if u aint made of rubber ,,,i get stuck on the floor ever time ahhahha
