That is definitely a symptom of low fluid -- although it could be something else, most commonly it is low fluid.

Yes, when you first run it, before moving, cycle through all the gear positions, including R, P and N, then check the fluid level. Only top it to the L mark.

Transmission fluid will go way up on the dipstick as it warms up. Do your final check after the engine has run for at least 15 minutes of driving. Be prepared to have to siphon some off. If it is too high it also can cause shifting problems.

Auto Trans fluid is always measured HOT -- good and hot after driving.
