I was speaking to a couple of guys over the weekend. The word has it that there are a few 5 speed transmissions around used in some of the 1200s that were imported many years ago (to Papua New Guinea), I'll be having a look around over the next week or so to confirm the tale. Can anyone justify this?? It sounds like it could possibly be true. I'll grab one for you JH if I find em?

There definitely were 5-speed 1200s. They were the GX-5 model, sold in Japan and possibly other asian markets. Datsun Competition also sold the gearboxes directly.

The 1200 5-speed looks just like the 4-speed, very small with lots of ribs all around. Not smooth like the newer 5-speeds. Grab one if you find it.

Good News/

I have found out that they are quite common, many of the utes around now are running 5 speeds. I have been offered a few 1200s in various conditions, and I will try and get a look at them ASAP.

I know for sure there are alot less 1200 utes on the road now, it's just a matter of finding out where they all went to.

I think you'll find those are the newer overdrive 5-speeds. Not the Datsun 1200 5-speeds.

DD I haven't heard anything about the GX-5 model. It is possible that they were here, very possible.

I thought I had the only Datsun 1000 here but apparently there was an army of them along time ago.

I don't think they had the Sedans or Coupes here but definitely the Utility.

Unfortunately when cars break down here the parts are often really hard to get so the cars are left in the village/bush until they're pretty much completely decayed.

While the 1200 was sold in some markets as the Datsun 1200 GX, I do not believe that they were ever offered outside japan with the 5 speed.
The 5 speeds that are available in PNG are very likeley to be the conventional shift 60 series overdrive gearboxes from the 1400 Bakkies, & while these are VERY good, they don't offer the same sporty performance of the lovely [non overdrive] 56A five speed models.
