Did you remove the clutch off the flywheel? If so it might not be lined up properly and the end of the input shaft isn't locating in the spigot bush. Other than that, usually a bit of twisting and shaking gets them in.

EDIT: If you say there's only 10mm to go, i'd say that the spline is already in the clutch plate and the spigot's not lined up.

If its a 1000 gearbox going onto a 1200 motor it will need about 15 cut off the shaft.

The best way to line up a clutch plate is by using an old input shaft from a trash gearbox, other than that, try Repco [or other] & get yourself a clutch alignment tool.

Either of these will allow you to correctly center the clutch disk & allow gearbox insertion. Sidedraught is dead right about the 1000 gearbox thing. The spigot on these is considerably longer & the A10 crank was drilled deeper to accomodate it, so when using the early box behind a newer engine, you need to remove about 1/2" to 5/8" & this can be done with a right angle grinder if you are very carefull.
Don't forger to put a chamfer on the pointy end of the shaft before re-installing.

Is this the little A10 that used to "boogie" quite a bit Sidedraught?

Be interested to hear how it goes if it is the one I'm thinking of.

After nearly 20 years in the trade, the only time I have had to use a clutch aligning tool is on diesel dual mass flywheels. The trick that I use is feeling behind the pressure plate and clutch disc. You can feel the difference as the friction plate is margionally smaller than the pressure plate surface area. Touch and feel. A bit like sex! I have never yet had a clutch that I cant alligh with my fingers and I have done hundreds of them of all sorts.
