I occasionally pull into Harry's Cafe de Wheels or Krispy Kreme in Liverpool on a Friday &/or Saturday night on my way home.
Anybody who knows the area will know it's the local car hangout with impromptu car shows every so often & naturally the local hotshots see some old fart [me] in a stock 1200 coupe [except for the mags] & often, somebody will usually ask me to sell it to them.
Those in the know get extra excited when they realise it's an auto too as they all want to stuff something nasty in it so the bigger trans tunnel is a bonus.
By now I have a stock reply.

"Well, it's not actually on the market fellers, but I'll give you a chance.
You get to make me ONE offer, ... that's one chance only to make me an offer I can't refuse.
I have a number in my head, .... you match or better that number, & come up with the cash TONIGHT & I'll unpack it, sign it over & walk home [120Km]"

I'm still driving it.
Some get a little upset when they try to make a second bid & I tell them that they had one chance only & they blew it, but they can try again next time they see me.

Can't be more fair than that.

I always got the standard 'Go the Datto' everywhere I went.

I could be at traffic lights and I'd hear it being yelled at me having no idea where it came from.

I would also get people making circle gestures with their hands trying to encourage me to light up the rears. I would never, and take off as slow as possible!

I'm amazed that everyone over the age of 45 owned at least one 120y or1200 at some stage, and they were surprised to find that the brand new camira that they sold it for was a piece of poo.

dad was driving my lil ute round and a guy was waiting in the carpark for him to return for like 20 minutes or so to put an offer up. to this dad said it aint for sale n the guy said everythings fofr sale and offered prices which quickly reached 20 grand... dont worry he didnt budge n its still here

i also get "go the datto" screamed at me at traffic lights. always puts a smile on the dile. the best tho is when people just stare as it going past and you see them mouthing "what the F*&^ is that thing"

I'm always hearing people say "Go the Dato"

I've been stopped at the lights countless times and had people ask questions like "What granny did you steal that from" or "Whats it running?"
There's always the occasional prick that asks you to "light em up" or a skyline driver who asks if you "wana run"

The best is just driving along and you get cars sit beside you with the wife and the kids staring at your car, i can only imagine that they would be telling their kids a datsun story.

What gives me a buzz is when your driving on the freeway and you calmly pass a car, that car will instantly try to accelerate past you just because they don't want to be pasted by a 120y.

Datsun's and 120Y's in particular are always being bagged as being slow and crap (not my words) but the truth is that other drivers are just jealous that their car isn't as cool, retro, nibble, fuel efficient and reliable as their commodore or falcon.

LONG LIVE THE DATSUN'S AND THE PEOPLE THAT DRIVE THEM

Everytime I roll up to a Datto cruise they say "When are you going to bring a Datsun?"...but I'm not driving one....weird.

Most older guys 60 + have a story they want to tell you about their datto days.
Last comment I had on my datto was when I drove it back from the workshop that fitted the new engine ( car on temp plates ) 4 guys in a VL pulled up next to me at the lights. Itried my best to behave but had to test the transplant there was a bit of a blur then I pulled back the 4 guys in the VL all had the same look of amazment and were mouthing FARKKKKKKK.
